CHAPTER 1 THE FLASH DRIVE THAT COULD DESTROY AN EMPIRE

The rain tapped softly against the hospital window.

Mariana Salcedo stared at the city lights below, watching thousands of people move through their ordinary lives while hers had been ripped apart in a single night.

Three days ago, she had been a daughter of one of the most respected families in the country.

The Salcedos.

A name carved into luxury hotels, political donations, and business towers.

A family whose smile appeared on magazine covers.

A family the world believed was perfect.

But Mariana knew the truth.

Behind the golden gates of their mansion was a house built on fear.

Her father, Rodrigo Salcedo, had never loved weakness.

And in his eyes, Mariana had become the family's greatest embarrassment.

She had discovered financial crimes hidden inside the family company. She had threatened to expose the truth.

So they decided to erase her.

And they almost succeeded.

The memory still haunted her.

The cold ocean.

The darkness.

Her son's terrified scream.

"Mom!"

Mariana closed her eyes as tears filled them.

Nico.

Her six-year-old son.

The only innocent person in a war created by powerful adults.

A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.

She quickly wiped her face.

"Come in."

The door opened slowly.

A tall man stepped inside.

Santiago Reyes.

For fifteen years, he had been the shadow behind Rodrigo Salcedo.

The man who protected the family.

The man who knew every secret.

But tonight, something was different.

He wasn't wearing his usual security suit.

He looked tired.

Angry.

Almost ashamed.

"How is Nico?" Santiago asked.

Mariana looked toward the small bed beside her.

Her son was sleeping peacefully, still holding the old stuffed animal he had carried onto the yacht that night.

"Doctors say he is recovering," she whispered.

Santiago nodded.

Then he reached inside his coat.

He placed a small black flash drive on the table.

Mariana looked at it.

"What is that?"

His expression hardened.

"The reason your family will never sleep peacefully again."

She stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Santiago took a deep breath.

"The yacht had cameras."

Mariana froze.

"What?"

"Your father thought nobody knew. The crew thought the system was disabled."

He pushed the flash drive toward her.

"But the night-vision cameras were still active."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"What did they record?"

Santiago looked directly into her eyes.

"Everything."

Mariana's heart stopped.

"No..."

"Your mother."

A pause.

"Your sister."

Another pause.

"And your father."

His voice became colder.

"They recorded all of them."

Mariana slowly reached for the flash drive.

Her hands trembled.

"They tried to kill my son."

Santiago nodded.

"They tried to kill both of you."

For years, Santiago had served Rodrigo Salcedo.

He had protected his secrets.

Covered his mistakes.

Followed orders.

But that night changed everything.

Because when Rodrigo pushed Mariana into the ocean...

Santiago finally realized something.

He wasn't protecting a family.

He was protecting monsters.

"Why are you helping me?" Mariana asked.

Santiago looked away.

"Because I was there."

Silence.

"I heard Nico crying."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I heard your father say, 'Nobody will believe her.'"

Mariana felt a chill.

Santiago continued.

"And I did nothing."

The guilt in his eyes said more than words.

"I watched."

Mariana picked up the flash drive.

"And now?"

Santiago looked toward the hospital door.

"Now you make them pay."

But neither of them noticed something.

A tiny red light blinking from the hallway camera.

May you like

Someone else was watching.

Someone who already knew Santiago had betrayed the Salcedo family.
