CHAPTER 17 THE FIRST SALCEDO

The car moved through the darkness.

Mariana sat silently in the back seat, staring at the strange symbol carved into the window.

The same symbol she had seen on old documents.

The same symbol on the necklace worn by the woman in the photograph.

The same symbol connected to every secret her family had buried.

But one question kept repeating in her mind.

Who was the first Salcedo?

For twenty-eight years, she believed she understood her family.

Rodrigo was the villain.

Elena was the betrayer.

Alejandro was the monster.

But every time she found an answer...

Another question appeared.

Another hidden layer.

Another person controlling the game.

And now...

Someone older than Alejandro.

Someone who even he feared.

The car stopped.

Mariana looked outside.

They were at the old Salcedo estate.

The original mansion.

The place where the family empire began.

Nobody had lived there for decades.

The building looked abandoned.

But the lights were on.

Someone was waiting.

The driver opened the door.

"You have five minutes."

Mariana looked at him.

"Who are you?"

The driver didn't answer.

He simply walked away.

She stepped out.

The mansion doors opened by themselves.

A message appeared on the old security screen:

WELCOME HOME, MARIANA.

Inside, the mansion was frozen in time.

Old paintings covered the walls.

Family portraits from generations ago.

Every face looked powerful.

Every face looked proud.

But Mariana noticed something strange.

One portrait was missing.

A large empty space hung above the fireplace.

A frame had been removed.

She walked closer.

Someone had scratched words into the wall behind it.

THE FAMILY YOU KNOW IS NOT THE FAMILY YOU HAVE.

A voice came from upstairs.

"You finally came."

Mariana looked up.

An older woman stood on the balcony.

She was dressed simply.

No jewelry.

No luxury.

Nothing that matched the Salcedo image.

But there was something about her.

Something familiar.

"Who are you?"

The woman slowly walked down the stairs.

"My name is Clara."

Mariana waited.

"And I am the person who started all of this."

Mariana felt her heart race.

"No."

Clara smiled sadly.

"Everyone thinks Alejandro created the empire."

A pause.

"He didn't."

She reached the bottom of the stairs.

"The Salcedo name existed long before him."

Mariana stared.

"Then who are you?"

The woman looked at the empty portrait.

"The first Salcedo."

The room became silent.

"You are saying..."

Clara nodded.

"I was Alejandro's mother."

Mariana stepped back.

Impossible.

Alejandro was old.

His parents should have been gone decades ago.

"You disappeared."

Clara smiled.

"That was the story."

Mariana remembered.

Another disappearance.

Another lie.

The Salcedos built their lives on pretending people were dead.

"Where is Nico?"

Clara's expression changed.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"With the person who understands his importance."

Mariana's anger rose.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

She stepped forward.

"But nobody tells me anything."

Clara looked at her.

"Because you still think this is about money."

Mariana froze.

"What?"

"The empire."

"The inheritance."

"The company."

Clara shook her head.

"Those are distractions."

She walked toward an old cabinet.

Inside was a small wooden box.

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten journal.

"The truth was never about wealth."

Mariana looked confused.

"Then what was it about?"

Clara handed her the journal.

"Control."

The first pages described the origins of the Salcedo family.

Not as businessmen.

But as a group that collected information.

Secrets.

Connections.

Influence.

They didn't build power through money.

They built power through knowing things about everyone.

Politicians.

Judges.

Executives.

Even other powerful families.

Mariana looked up.

"So the empire..."

"Was never a business."

Clara nodded.

"It was a network."

A pause.

"And every generation protected it."

"Why me?"

Mariana asked.

Clara looked at her carefully.

"Because you were the first person born into this family who wanted to destroy it."

The words hit her.

"Destroy?"

Clara nodded.

"Rodrigo wanted to control the empire."

"Alejandro wanted to continue it."

"But you..."

She smiled slightly.

"You wanted justice."

Suddenly, a sound came from another room.

Mariana turned.

A small voice.

"Mom?"

Her heart stopped.

"Nico?"

She ran.

The door opened.

And there he was.

Alive.

Safe.

Sitting on a chair.

But someone was standing behind him.

Someone Mariana never expected.

Santiago.

Mariana stopped.

Her emotions collided.

Relief.

Anger.

Betrayal.

"Why?"

Santiago looked at her.

"I tried to protect him."

"You kidnapped my son."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I saved him."

Mariana stared.

"From who?"

Santiago looked toward Clara.

And whispered:

"From the person who actually ordered the yacht attack."

The room went silent.

Clara's expression did not change.

Mariana slowly turned.

"Clara?"

Santiago continued:

"The person who started this war..."

A pause.

"Was not Rodrigo."

"Was not Elena."

"Was not Alejandro."

Mariana looked at the old woman.

Clara remained calm.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"I never wanted you dead, Mariana."

A pause.

"I wanted you to become strong enough to replace me."

Mariana froze.

"Replace you?"

Clara smiled.

"Yes."

"The Salcedo empire needs a new leader."

Mariana shook her head.

"I don't want it."

Clara's expression hardened.

"You don't understand."

She looked toward Nico.

"You don't get a choice."

Suddenly, all the lights in the mansion turned red.

An alarm began.

Santiago looked at the security system.

His face changed.

"Someone breached the mansion."

Clara frowned.

"Impossible."

A voice came through the speakers.

A voice everyone recognized.

Rodrigo.

But Rodrigo was supposed to be defeated.

Supposed to be powerless.

"Mother."

Everyone froze.

Clara's face changed for the first time.

Fear.

Rodrigo laughed through the speakers.

"I think it's time the family learns the final truth."

A pause.

"The person you all trusted..."

"The person who controlled everything..."

"Was never Clara."

The mansion doors suddenly opened.

A figure entered.

Someone carrying a folder.

Someone who had been missing for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

And Mariana recognized the face.

Because it was impossible.

May you like

It was...

HERSELF.
