CHAPTER 6 THE SECRET BURIED BEFORE MARIANA WAS BORN

The wedding hall remained silent.

Not the peaceful silence of a celebration.

The kind of silence that came after something impossible had been revealed.

Everyone stared at the screen.

The photograph remained frozen.

A young Mariana.

Only five years old.

Standing beside a man nobody recognized.

A man who wasn't Rodrigo Salcedo.

A man who looked at the camera with a strange familiarity.

Like someone protecting a child he loved.

The words beneath the photo burned into everyone's mind.

YOUR REAL FATHER KNOWS.

Rodrigo was the first person to react.

"Destroy that screen."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

But everyone noticed something.

Fear.

For the first time, the powerful Rodrigo Salcedo was afraid.

Security guards rushed toward the control room.

But Santiago moved first.

He blocked their path.

"Nobody touches anything."

Rodrigo stared at him.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Santiago looked back.

"No."

He shook his head.

"For fifteen years, I understood exactly what I was doing."

A pause.

"And I regret every day of it."

Mariana couldn't move.

The image on the screen felt impossible.

She had spent her entire life believing Rodrigo was her father.

She remembered his cold hands.

His strict rules.

His disappointment whenever she questioned him.

But she had always believed one thing.

At least she belonged to him.

Now even that was being taken away.

Santiago approached carefully.

"Mariana."

She looked at him.

"Did you know about this?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than any answer.

"You knew."

Santiago lowered his eyes.

"I knew there were secrets."

"Not this one."

Mariana's voice became colder.

"What secrets?"

Before Santiago could answer...

Rodrigo interrupted.

"Don't listen to him."

Everyone turned.

Rodrigo stepped forward.

His perfect image was gone.

Now he looked like a man fighting for survival.

"You are my daughter."

Mariana stared at him.

"Then why is there another man in my childhood photos?"

Rodrigo said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Across the room, Isabella stood frozen.

She had always believed Mariana was the weak one.

The emotional one.

The one who didn't understand power.

But now she realized something terrifying.

Mariana had survived everything.

The ocean.

The lies.

The betrayal.

And she was still standing.

Isabella walked closer.

"Mariana..."

Everyone looked at her.

She looked nervous.

"There is something you need to know."

Rodrigo's expression changed.

"Isabella."

But she continued.

"When we were children, I heard grandmother talking."

Mariana looked at her.

"About what?"

Isabella swallowed.

"About a man named Gabriel."

The name immediately changed Santiago's expression.

Mariana noticed.

"You know that name."

Santiago became silent.

"Who is Gabriel?"

Nobody answered.

Then Santiago finally whispered:

"Gabriel Salcedo."

Mariana frowned.

"Salcedo?"

Santiago nodded slowly.

"He was your grandfather's first son."

The room went quiet.

"But he disappeared twenty-five years ago."

Mariana stared.

"Why?"

Santiago looked toward Rodrigo.

"Because Rodrigo made sure nobody remembered him."

The wedding guests began leaving.

The media surrounded the mansion.

The Salcedo name was collapsing live on television.

But inside the chaos...

Mariana discovered something much worse.

Her attempted murder wasn't only about revenge.

It was about hiding a family secret.

A secret older than she was.

Later that night, Mariana returned to the hospital with Nico.

She sat beside his bed.

Her son was still too young to understand everything.

But he understood one thing.

His mother was hurting.

"Mom?"

She looked down.

"Yes?"

"Are we going home?"

Mariana smiled sadly.

"I don't know where home is anymore."

Nico reached for her hand.

"You're my home."

Those words broke something inside her.

For the first time since the ocean...

Mariana allowed herself to cry.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was tired.

At midnight, Santiago arrived.

He carried an old brown folder.

"I found this in Rodrigo's private archive."

Mariana looked at it.

"What is it?"

"Something your father tried to erase."

She opened the folder.

Inside was an old birth certificate.

Her name.

Her birthday.

But the father's name had been covered.

Underneath was another document.

A letter.

Written twenty-eight years ago.

The first sentence made Mariana freeze.

"If anything happens to me, tell my daughter the truth. Rodrigo Salcedo is not her father."

Her hands began shaking.

"Who wrote this?"

Santiago looked at her.

"Gabriel."

Mariana slowly opened the letter.

But before she could read further...

The hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went completely dark.

A voice came from the hallway.

"Mariana."

She stood up.

"Who is there?"

A figure appeared in the doorway.

An older man.

His face hidden in the darkness.

Then he spoke.

"You finally found the truth."

Mariana froze.

Because she recognized the voice.

Not from memory.

From the old recordings.

The same voice that had called during the wedding.

The stranger stepped into the light.

May you like

And whispered:

"I am the man your family tried to bury."
