Chapter 9 – A New Beginning

Two months later, Lucy went into labor.

It was far too early.

Doctors rushed her into surgery while Emma held her hand until the operating room doors closed.

Three endless hours passed.

Finally, a neonatal specialist walked into the waiting area with a tired smile.

"She's here."

Emma burst into tears.

The baby weighed barely three pounds.

Tiny fingers.

Tiny heartbeat.

A fighter.

Lucy named her Hope.

Because after everything they had survived together, no other name felt right.

Days later, Mark visited the neonatal intensive care unit.

He carried a small stuffed firefighter bear.

"I wasn't sure if this was appropriate," he admitted.

Lucy smiled for the first time in months.

"It's perfect."

He looked through the incubator glass.

"She's beautiful."

"She almost wasn't here."

Mark nodded.

"I think about that elevator every day."

Lucy looked at her daughter sleeping peacefully.

"I don't anymore."

Mark looked surprised.

She smiled softly.

"Because every day I spend with her is a day that elevator didn't win."

For the first time since the rescue, Lucy truly believed those words.
