Months later Alex requested one meeting.
Only one.
Lucy agreed.
Hope came too.
They met in the botanical gardens.
Alex brought no gifts.
Only honesty.
"I'm sorry."
Hope studied him.
"My mommy says people can change."
"I hope she's right."
Hope thought for several seconds.
"I forgive you."
Alex closed his eyes.
"But..."
She smiled gently.
"I don't know you yet."
Those simple words carried no anger.
Only truth.
Alex nodded.

He walked away feeling lighter than he had in years.
