Chapter 3 – The Evidence Nobody Expected

Three days later, the department announced an internal review.
Officially, it was routine.
Unofficially, someone had filed a complaint.
Mark.
Captain Hernandez called him into his office.
"You understand what this means?"
"Yes, sir."
"You're accusing a decorated lieutenant of violating rescue priority."
"I'm reporting what happened."
"There were witnesses?"
"There were seven."
Most had already given statements.
An elderly accountant.
A delivery driver.
The little boy's mother.
Even the store security team.
Then came the surprise.
The elevator itself had cameras.
The emergency recording system operated on an independent backup battery.
The footage survived.
No audio.
Just images.
At exactly 9:16 p.m., the doors opened.
The video showed Alex stepping inside.
He paused.
His eyes swept across the elevator.
For nearly two seconds.
Long enough to see everyone.
Long enough to see Lucy sitting against the back wall with one hand over her stomach.
Then...
He deliberately turned away.
Straight toward Valerie.
The conference room fell silent as investigators replayed the footage.
Again.
And again.
No one spoke.
Captain Hernandez finally whispered,
"He saw her."
Nobody argued.
Because everyone in the room had seen it too.
At that same moment, upstairs in the maternity intensive care unit, Lucy woke to the sound of a tiny heartbeat echoing through the monitor.
Her daughter was still alive.
Barely.
Lucy rested one hand over her stomach.
May you like
She no longer prayed for Alex to come through the door.
She prayed he wouldn't.
