Chapter 13 – Firefighter Day
Mark invited Lucy and Hope to the fire station's annual community day.
Hope wore an oversized plastic firefighter helmet that kept slipping over her eyes.
She proudly sprayed a training hose while firefighters applauded.
Mark watched her from across the yard.
"You know," another firefighter whispered, "she adores you."
Mark smiled.
"I adore her too."
Lucy noticed the way Hope instinctively reached for Mark whenever she became nervous.

That evening Hope climbed into Mark's lap.
