Chapter 10 – The Promise That Remained

One year later, autumn painted Chicago in shades of gold.
Hope laughed as she took uncertain little steps across the grass in Lincoln Park.
Lucy crouched a few feet away with open arms.
"You can do it, sweetheart."
Hope stumbled.
Then giggled.
Then kept walking.
A familiar voice came from behind.
"She's getting so big."
Lucy turned.
Alex stood several yards away.
He looked older.
Quieter.
The confidence that once defined him had been replaced by humility.
He never stepped closer without permission.
"I heard today was her birthday," he said.
Lucy nodded.
He handed her a small gift bag.
"For Hope."
Inside was a children's book about brave little girls.
Nothing more.
No letter.
No request.
No excuse.
"I know I can't undo what happened," Alex said.
"I know."
"I'll spend the rest of my life regretting that day."
Lucy looked toward Hope, who had just reached her with a proud smile.
She lifted her daughter into her arms.
"Regret belongs to the past."
Alex lowered his eyes.
"And forgiveness?"
Lucy thought for a long moment.
"I forgave you a long time ago."
He looked up hopefully.
"But forgiveness doesn't always mean a second chance."
The words were gentle.
They were also final.
Alex nodded.
"I understand."
He walked away without looking back.
Lucy kissed Hope's forehead.
"My promise to you," she whispered, "is simple."
"I will never let anyone make you wonder whether you are someone's first choice."
Hope smiled, wrapping her tiny fingers around Lucy's hand.
For the first time in a very long time, Lucy felt completely safe.
The past would always be part of her story.
May you like
But it would never again decide her future.
The End.
