Chapter 14 – A Chance Encounter

One snowy December evening Lucy stopped at a bookstore.

Hope ran toward the children's section.

Someone else reached for the same book.

Alex.

He froze.

Lucy stiffened.

Hope looked between them.

"You know my mommy?"

Alex swallowed.

"We knew each other a long time ago."

Hope smiled politely.

"I'm Hope."

"I know."

His voice nearly broke.

"It's very nice to meet you."

Hope offered him the picture book.

"You can look first."

Alex smiled with wet eyes.

"No, sweetheart."

"I think it belongs with you."

Lucy thanked him with a quiet nod.

Nothing more.

They left.

Neither looked back.

Yet Alex remained standing between the bookshelves long after they disappeared.
