Chapter 5 – Valerie's Story Begins to Crack

The media loved heroes.
By the end of the week, every local station had aired footage of the dramatic elevator rescue. Headlines praised the Chicago Fire Department for saving eight civilians trapped underground for seven hours.
Valerie appeared in one interview.
"I honestly thought I was going to die," she said through tears. "Lieutenant Alex Davis never hesitated."
She never mentioned Lucy.
But someone else did.
Tyler, the delivery driver from the elevator, uploaded a short video to social media.
"I was there," he said. "The pregnant woman wasn't rescued first. She was barely conscious while another woman got carried out."
Within hours, the video spread across Chicago.
Comments exploded.
"Why wasn't the pregnant victim the priority?"
"Who was the other woman?"
"Did the lieutenant know her?"
Reporters dug deeper.
It didn't take long to discover that Valerie Morgan was Alex's former girlfriend.
Photographs surfaced.
Alex helping her move into a new apartment.
Alex repairing her kitchen sink.
Alex carrying grocery bags into her building late at night.
None of it proved an affair.
But together, the images painted a story that looked far too familiar.
At headquarters, Internal Affairs requested Alex's phone records.
Captain Hernandez watched his lieutenant sign the consent forms without a word.
"You know," the captain said quietly, "sometimes the truth destroys a career faster than any fire."

Alex didn't answer.
For the first time, he wondered if the rescue had been judged long before the investigation had even begun.
