When Hope turned seven, Lucy decided the time had come.
They sat beneath the old oak tree in Lincoln Park.
"You've asked about your father before."
Hope nodded.
Lucy explained everything.
Not every painful detail.
Only the truth.
"He made a terrible choice one day."
"But he has spent many years trying to become a better person."
"Does he love me?"
Lucy answered carefully.
"I believe he does."
"Then why doesn't he live with us?"
"Because loving someone and deserving to be part of their life aren't always the same."
