CHAPTER 9 — The Letter From the Dead

The letter sat on the table between them.
Four simple lines.
Four sentences that changed everything.
Daniel stared at the handwriting.
Aaron Brooks.
A man he barely knew.
A man who had died because of a secret connected to his family.
Yet somehow…
Aaron had trusted him.
More than Hannah had.
More than Daniel had trusted himself.
“Where did you find this?”
Daniel looked at Martin.
The old steward folded his hands.
“Behind the portrait in the west hallway.”
“Why was it hidden?”
Martin looked toward Hannah.
“Because Aaron wanted it found only when the truth became dangerous.”
Hannah picked up the letter.
Her hands trembled.
She read it again.
Hannah,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
Trust Daniel Carver.
He is not the man everyone believes he is.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He knew.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Knew what?”
“That I would hate you.”
The words surprised him.
Hannah lowered the letter.
“Aaron knew I would blame the Carvers.”
Daniel remained silent.
Because he knew she was right.
Most people would.
Michael stood near the window, watching the rain outside.
“I owe Aaron everything.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew him.”
Michael nodded.
“He was one of the few people who helped me after I disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed people could change.”
Daniel gave a quiet laugh.
“A dangerous belief.”
Michael looked at him.
“That’s why he trusted you.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Me?”
Michael nodded.
“Aaron told me something before he died.”
“What?”
“He said, ‘Daniel Carver is trapped by his name, but he isn’t owned by it.’”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked away.
Nobody had ever described him that way.
Most people saw the Carver name first.
The man second.
That night, Hannah finally asked the question she had been avoiding.
“Michael.”
He turned.
“Yes?”
“If you knew about the baby…”
She swallowed.
“Why did you leave?”
Michael closed his eyes.
The pain returned.
“Because I thought disappearing would protect you.”
“It didn’t.”
“I know.”
Her voice became stronger.
“It destroyed me.”
Michael accepted the words.
“I was wrong.”
Hannah looked at him.
“You let me believe I lost everything.”
“I know.”
“You let Aaron die.”
Michael’s face broke.
“I tried to save him.”
“Did you?”
The question was quiet.
But it hurt more than anger.
Michael looked down.
“No.”
Daniel left them alone.
He walked into the hallway and found Marcus waiting.
“We found something.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Marcus handed him a tablet.
“A security recording from the night Aaron died.”
Daniel watched.
The footage showed a warehouse.
Aaron walking inside.
Then another figure appeared.
Daniel leaned closer.
The image was blurry.
But the person’s face became visible for one second.
Daniel froze.
“No.”
Marcus watched him.
“You know him?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because the person in the video…
Was not a stranger.
It was someone who had worked for the Carver family for twenty years.
Someone Daniel trusted.
Someone who knew every secret inside the mansion.
“Who is it?” Marcus asked.
Daniel whispered the name.
“Richard Vale.”
Richard Vale.
The Carver family’s former legal advisor.
The man who handled contracts.
The man who managed finances.
The man who had been beside Daniel’s father until the day he died.
The man who had comforted Daniel after Michael’s funeral.
Daniel suddenly remembered.
Richard had been the person who told him Michael was dead.
Richard had arranged the funeral.
Richard had handled all the paperwork.
His entire life…
Had been built on information from one man.
Before Daniel could react, every light in the mansion went out.
Again.
The security screens went black.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
“Someone breached the system.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“From inside?”
Marcus checked the controls.
Then froze.
“Yes.”
A message appeared on the main screen.
Only one sentence.
You were never supposed to find the truth, Daniel.
Then another message appeared.
Ask your mother why she chose which son to save.
Daniel felt his blood turn cold.
Because there was only one person who could answer that question.
Eleanor Carver.
At the same moment, Hannah heard footsteps outside her room.
She opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope placed on the floor.
Her name was written on it.
She picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Aaron.
Standing beside a man.
A man she recognized.
Daniel.
But the date written on the back made her heart stop.
Because it was taken…
Two years before she ever entered the Carver mansion.
May you like
And underneath the photograph was one sentence:
Aaron knew Daniel before you did.
