CHAPTER 6 — The Truth Aaron Died Protecting

Hannah did not sleep.
Not after Claire left.
Not after the words that shattered everything she believed.
The baby is not Aaron’s.
She sat in the nursery for hours, staring at the unfinished crib.
The same crib Aaron had painted.
The same room where they planned their future.
Every memory now felt different.
Every promise carried a hidden meaning.
Her hands rested over her stomach.
“I don’t understand,” she whispered.
The baby moved.
A small kick.
A reminder that no matter how complicated the past had become…
A life was still growing inside her.
A life that deserved the truth.
The next morning, Daniel found Hannah sitting by the window.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
Not because she looked upset.
Because she looked empty.
And Daniel had learned that emptiness was often more dangerous than anger.
“What happened?”
Hannah didn’t look at him.
“Did you know?”
Daniel stopped.
“Know what?”
“That Michael was alive.”
The silence answered before he did.
His face changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But Hannah noticed.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“Then why do you look like someone just confirmed something you already suspected?”
Daniel walked closer.
“I found out last night.”
“From your mother?”
His silence confirmed it.
Hannah stood.
“You all knew.”
“No.”
“Your family knew there was a secret, and everyone let Aaron die.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“I didn’t know.”
“But you’re a Carver.”
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they were true.
Daniel had spent his whole life benefiting from the Carver name.
Even when he tried to be different, he was still part of the same world.
“I’m sorry.”
Hannah looked at him.
The apology surprised her.
Men like Daniel Carver did not apologize.
Not easily.
Not sincerely.
“I don’t need your sympathy.”
“I’m not offering sympathy.”
“Then what?”
Daniel held her gaze.
“Justice.”
Later that day, Daniel brought Hannah to the old Carver family archives.
A hidden room beneath the mansion.
Thousands of documents.
Old photographs.
Records nobody outside the family knew existed.
Daniel placed a box on the table.
“This belonged to Michael.”
Hannah opened it.
Inside were letters.
Photos.
A small notebook.
She opened the first page.
Michael’s handwriting covered the paper.
I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people.
She turned the page.
But the child is innocent.
Her heart raced.
Daniel read over her shoulder.
“Michael knew about the baby.”
Hannah continued reading.
Claire knows the truth. She has known since the beginning.
She looked up.
“Claire?”
Daniel nodded.
“She was engaged to Michael before she was with me.”
Hannah froze.
“What?”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Claire was never supposed to marry me.”
“She wanted Michael.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she choose you?”
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“Because Michael disappeared.”
The pieces began connecting.
Claire’s obsession.
Her hatred.
Her cruelty.
It wasn’t just jealousy.
It was fear.
Fear that Michael would return.
Fear that the child would expose her.
That evening, Daniel confronted Claire again.
This time, he came prepared.
He placed Michael’s notebook on the table.
Claire’s face immediately lost color.
“You shouldn’t have found that.”
Daniel stared at her.
“So it’s true.”
Claire said nothing.
“You knew Michael was alive.”
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked him.
“Why?”
Her expression changed.
Because for the first time, Claire stopped pretending.
“Because he ruined everything.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“He was your fiancé.”
“He was weak.”
“Michael?”
Claire laughed.
“He cared about people. He trusted people.”
Her eyes became colder.
“That’s why he lost.”
Daniel studied her.
“What did you do?”
Claire looked away.
“I didn’t kill him.”
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You didn’t answer.”
She remained silent.
Then whispered:
“I helped someone who did.”
Meanwhile, Hannah returned to her room.
But someone was waiting inside.
She froze.
A man stood near the window.
Older.
Scarred.
But familiar.
She knew his face from photographs.
Her breath disappeared.
“Michael?”
The man turned.
For fifteen years, Daniel Carver’s dead brother had existed only as a memory.
Now he was standing in front of her.
Alive.
Michael looked at her stomach.
His eyes filled with emotion.
“I’m sorry.”
Hannah stepped back.
“For what?”
“For letting you suffer alone.”
She couldn’t speak.
Michael moved closer.
“I tried to protect you.”
“Then why did Aaron die?”
Michael’s face changed.
Pain.
Guilt.
Regret.
“Because Aaron found out the truth.”
“What truth?”
Michael looked directly at her.
“The person who ordered Aaron’s death…”
A pause.
“…was someone inside the Carver family.”
Before Hannah could ask more, a gunshot exploded outside.
The mansion lights went dark.
May you like
And Michael whispered:
“They found me.”
