CHAPTER 5 — The Brother Who Never Died

Daniel Carver had spent his entire life believing one thing.

His family had already lost everything it could lose.

Fifteen years ago, his younger brother, Michael Carver, died in a car accident on a dark road outside Providence.

The funeral was closed.

The body was never shown.

Daniel had been twenty-three years old.

Young.

Angry.

And too broken to question the explanation everyone gave him.

The police called it an accident.

His father called it fate.

His mother never spoke about it again.

But now Hannah Brooks was standing in front of him, seven months pregnant, telling him the impossible.

Michael Carver knew about her baby.

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s not possible.”

Hannah’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.”

“I’m not saying I don’t believe you.”

“Yes, you are.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’m saying my brother is dead.”

Hannah reached into the drawer beside the crib.

Her hands shook as she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“This was left for me.”

Daniel took it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the name at the bottom made his heart stop.

Michael.

Daniel read the short message.

Hannah, if anything happens to me, protect the child. The truth about the Carvers cannot die with me.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“Where did you get this?”

“Inside Aaron’s toolbox.”

“When?”

“After he died.”

Daniel looked up.

“Why didn’t you show me this before?”

Hannah laughed bitterly.

“Because eight months ago, I didn’t know if your family killed my husband.”

The honesty hurt.

But Daniel understood.

That night, Daniel visited his mother.

Eleanor Carver lived in the old family estate on the north side of the city.

A woman who had survived decades of enemies, scandals, and betrayal.

She was sitting beside the fireplace when Daniel entered.

“You look troubled.”

Daniel placed the paper on the table.

Her face changed immediately.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

“You know this handwriting.”

Eleanor looked away.

“No.”

“Mother.”

Silence.

Daniel had negotiated with criminals.

He had stared down men who threatened his life.

But seeing fear in his mother’s eyes unsettled him more than any enemy.

“Michael is alive.”

The words left his mouth.

Eleanor’s hand trembled.

“Who told you?”

Daniel stepped back.

“You knew?”

She closed her eyes.

“I knew he survived.”

The room became silent.

“Why did you let me believe he was dead?”

“Because that was the only way to keep you alive.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Explain.”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Your father built an empire.”

“Yes.”

“But he built it on secrets.”

Daniel already knew that.

“He had enemies.”

“Everyone does.”

“No.”

His mother’s voice lowered.

“The kind of enemies who don’t threaten you.”

A pause.

“They erase you.”

Back at the mansion, Hannah was trying to understand everything.

Michael Carver.

A missing brother.

A secret child.

A connection to Aaron’s death.

Nothing made sense.

Then someone knocked.

She expected Martin.

Instead…

It was Claire.

Hannah immediately stood.

“What do you want?”

Claire entered slowly.

For once, she did not look confident.

She looked desperate.

“I need to talk to you.”

Hannah almost laughed.

“After what you did?”

Claire ignored the comment.

“Your baby.”

Hannah’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

“What about my baby?”

Claire looked at her.

Then whispered:

“You think Aaron was the father.”

Hannah felt anger rise.

“He was.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

“He wasn’t.”

Hannah stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“The night Aaron died, he wasn’t trying to expose Whitlock Shipping.”

“What?”

“He was trying to protect Michael Carver’s child.”

Hannah froze.

The room felt smaller.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I was.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Your husband discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

Claire’s eyes filled with something unexpected.

Regret.

“The baby you’re carrying…”

She swallowed.

“…is not Aaron’s.”

Hannah felt the world stop.

“No.”

Claire continued.

“It belongs to Michael Carver.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Hannah’s first instinct was denial.

Anger.

Fear.

But then memories started returning.

The strange things Aaron had said.

The secrets he refused to explain.

The night before he died…

When he held her and whispered:

“If anything happens to me, trust the baby.”

At the time, she thought he was afraid of losing their family.

Now…

She wondered if he was afraid of losing a secret.

Outside the mansion, hidden in the darkness, Michael Carver watched the lights of the house.

Fifteen years of hiding.

Fifteen years of waiting.

He touched an old scar on his face.

Then smiled.

“Daniel finally knows.”

The man beside him asked:

“What happens now?”

Michael looked toward the mansion.

“Now my brother learns the truth.”

“And Hannah?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“She was never supposed to suffer.”

A pause.

“But Claire made sure she did.”

The man looked confused.

“Why?”

Michael’s eyes turned cold.

“Because Claire Whitlock didn’t just want Daniel.”

May you like

“She wanted everything that belonged to the Carver family.”

Including the child.
