CHAPTER 2 — The Man Behind the Name

Daniel Carver had built his entire life around control.
Control over his business.
Control over his enemies.
Control over the people who worked for him.
Most importantly, control over his emotions.
People in Providence whispered that Daniel Carver was dangerous because he never lost his temper. Other men shouted when they were angry. They broke things. They threatened.
Daniel simply became quiet.
And quiet men were often the ones people feared the most.
But that night, standing in the ballroom and seeing Hannah Brooks trembling beneath Claire Whitlock’s cruelty, something inside him had shifted.
He had walked into countless violent situations.
He had seen men injured, betrayed, and destroyed.
Yet the sight of a pregnant woman standing alone while forty wealthy guests watched her humiliation had affected him differently.
Because Hannah had not looked angry.
She had looked abandoned.
And Daniel knew that expression.
He had worn it himself years ago.
The private study door closed behind him.
Claire followed immediately.
“Daniel, you’re overreacting.”
He stood near the fireplace, staring at the flames.
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
She laughed softly, trying to recover her confidence.
“It was a joke. Everyone understood that.”
“A joke?”
Daniel turned around.
“You cut a pregnant woman’s hair in front of my guests.”
“She embarrassed me.”
“How?”
Claire hesitated.
“She acts innocent.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“That is not an answer.”
Claire walked closer.
“You don’t see what she’s doing because you’re too busy feeling sorry for her.”
“For five months, Hannah has worked in this house.”
“And?”
“And nobody has ever complained about her.”
Claire crossed her arms.
“Because she knows how to manipulate people.”
Daniel studied her.
Something about her answer bothered him.
Claire was not defending herself.
She was attacking Hannah.
“That woman lost her husband,” Daniel said.
“A convenient story.”
The room became silent.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?”
Claire realized she had revealed too much.
She quickly corrected herself.
“I mean… people lie when they need sympathy.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know something about Aaron Brooks?”
Claire looked away.
“No.”
Too fast.
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel noticed.
He noticed everything.
Later that night, after the guests had left, Daniel entered the security room beneath the mansion.
His head of security, Marcus Reed, was reviewing camera footage.
“You asked for everything from the last six months.”
“Yes.”
Marcus placed several files on the desk.
“You think Claire knows something?”
“I think someone does.”
Marcus looked confused.
“About the maid?”
Daniel looked at the screen showing Hannah walking through the kitchen earlier that day.
“She’s hiding something.”
Marcus nodded.
“Everyone is.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Her background check was strange.”
“How?”
“Too clean.”
Daniel frowned.
“Explain.”
“No social media. No financial history after her husband died. No close friends. No relatives listed except a missing brother.”
“Missing brother?”
Marcus opened another file.
“Caleb Monroe.”
Daniel read the information carefully.
“Bookkeeper.”
“Yes.”
“Disappeared before Aaron’s death.”
Marcus nodded.
“And there’s something else.”
“What?”
“A week before Aaron Brooks died, he accessed files connected to Whitlock Shipping.”
Daniel’s eyes darkened.
The Whitlock name had been connected to problems before.
Missing money.
Illegal contracts.
People who disappeared.
But never enough evidence.
Until now.
“Find everything about Aaron Brooks,” Daniel ordered.
Marcus looked at him.
“And Hannah?”
Daniel stared at the frozen image of her face on the monitor.
For the first time in years, he looked uncertain.
“Find out why she came here.”
Across the mansion, Hannah sat alone in her small room.
She held an old photograph.
A picture of Aaron standing beside a newborn crib they had planned to use.
Her fingers touched his face.
“I’m getting close,” she whispered.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Her heart stopped.
She answered.
A voice came through.
A voice she had not heard in eight months.
“Hannah…”
She froze.
Because she knew that voice.
“Caleb?”
Silence.
Then the whisper came.
“Don’t trust Daniel Carver.”
Hannah stood immediately.
“Where are you?”
But the call ended.
And on the other side of the mansion…
Daniel Carver received a message from Marcus.
One sentence.
One name.
One truth that changed everything.

Aaron Brooks did not die in an accident.
He was murdered.
