CHAPTER 8 — The Child Everyone Wanted

The Carver mansion had never felt so unsafe.

For years, Daniel believed the greatest threats came from outside.

Rival families.

Corrupt businessmen.

Enemies who wanted his territory.

But now he understood the truth.

The most dangerous enemy had been walking through his front doors.

Eating at his table.

Smiling beside him.

Planning his destruction.

Claire Whitlock.

The security room remained silent after Michael’s revelation.

Daniel stood near the monitor screens, watching every camera feed across the property.

“Where is she?”

Marcus checked the systems.

“Claire’s phone signal disappeared ten minutes ago.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“She’s gone.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“She’s not running.”

“How do you know?” Daniel asked.

“Because Claire never runs from something she thinks belongs to her.”

Hannah looked at Michael.

“What does my baby have to do with her?”

Michael was quiet.

Then he answered.

“When I discovered what my father was hiding, I found out something else.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“Our family fortune wasn’t built only through legitimate businesses.”

Daniel already knew parts of that.

But Michael continued.

“There was a private account.”

Marcus frowned.

“A hidden inheritance?”

Michael nodded.

“Created by our grandfather.”

“And?”

Michael looked at Hannah.

“The account can only be accessed by a blood heir.”

Silence.

Daniel understood first.

“No.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Hannah looked between them.

“What?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“The child.”

Her face went pale.

“My baby?”

“Your baby is connected to the Carver bloodline.”

Hannah stepped back.

“But Aaron was my husband.”

Michael looked at her with sadness.

“I know.”

The pain in his voice told her something.

Something she wasn’t ready to hear.

“Aaron loved you,” Michael said.

“He raised you believing he was the father.”

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Believing?”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because the truth is…”

He paused.

“You were already pregnant before you married Aaron.”

The room went completely silent.

Hannah felt like the floor disappeared beneath her.

Memories rushed back.

Eight months earlier.

The night she met Michael.

The night before everything changed.

But it was impossible.

She had buried that memory.

Because Michael told her he would return.

Because he promised he would fix everything.

Then he vanished.

She touched her stomach.

“No…”

Daniel noticed her reaction.

“Hannah.”

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know.”

Nobody spoke.

“I thought…”

Her voice broke.

“I thought Aaron was the only person who stayed.”

Daniel saw the pain on her face.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Pain.

Because she had spent months grieving a man while carrying a secret she never understood.

Later that evening, Daniel found Hannah outside near the garden.

The rain had stopped.

The sky was dark.

“You should be resting.”

She didn’t turn.

“I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Daniel stood beside her.

“You’re Hannah.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Everyone keeps telling me what I am.”

“A witness.”

“A target.”

“A connection to some family secret.”

She looked at him.

“But nobody asks what I want.”

Daniel had no answer.

Because she was right.

Everyone wanted something from her.

Claire wanted control.

Michael wanted protection.

The Carvers wanted their legacy.

Even Daniel wanted justice.

But Hannah?

Nobody had asked Hannah what she needed.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked surprised.

“You say that a lot.”

“Because I mean it.”

For the first time, Daniel let his guard down.

“When I saw you in that ballroom…”

He stopped.

Hannah waited.

“I realized I had spent years protecting the wrong people.”

The honesty caught her off guard.

“You protected Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because I thought she was the one person who understood my world.”

“And now?”

Daniel looked at Hannah.

“Now I think she was the person who almost destroyed it.”

Inside the mansion, Martin Hale discovered something hidden behind an old painting.

A small envelope.

No name.

No markings.

Only one sentence written on the front.

For Hannah Brooks.

His hands trembled.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Aaron’s handwriting.

Martin opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Only four lines.

Hannah,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

Trust Daniel Carver.

He is not the man everyone believes he is.

Martin froze.

Because Aaron had written the letter before he died.

And he had trusted Daniel.

The very man Hannah was taught to fear.

Across town, Claire entered an abandoned warehouse.

A man stood waiting.

Older.

Powerful.

The same man who had helped her hide Michael’s survival.

“You failed.”

Claire threw her purse onto the table.

“He’s alive.”

“And Daniel knows.”

She looked furious.

“This was never supposed to happen.”

The man smiled.

“You became emotional.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

He laughed.

“You still think you’re in control.”

He stepped closer.

“You cut that maid’s hair because you wanted to prove she was powerless.”

A pause.

“But you made one mistake.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

“You made Daniel Carver care about her.”

The words struck her.

Because deep down…

She knew they were true.

The man continued:

“And when Daniel Carver cares about someone…”

He smiled.

“He destroys anyone who tries to take them away.”

Claire looked back toward the mansion.

May you like

For the first time…

She wasn’t certain she would win.
