CHAPTER 1 — The Secret Beneath the Silence

Ben’s small hand rested against Hannah’s stomach, his eyes filled with the kind of innocent curiosity that made her forget, even for a moment, how dangerous the world around her had become.

“Did he kick today?”

Hannah smiled softly.

“Maybe she kicked.”

Ben frowned.

“You still don’t know?”

She laughed quietly.

“Not yet. Your guess?”

“A girl.”

“Why?”

“Because girls are smarter.”

The answer surprised a real laugh out of her.

For a few seconds, the Carver mansion felt less like a place filled with secrets and more like a home.

Then the sound of expensive heels echoed through the hallway.

The smile disappeared from Hannah’s face.

Claire Whitlock.

Even before the woman appeared, the atmosphere changed.

Claire entered the service wing wearing a white silk dress that probably cost more than Hannah earned in six months. Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, her diamond earrings catching the light with every movement.

She looked at Ben first.

Then at Hannah.

Then at the sandwich on the table.

“How touching,” Claire said.

Hannah immediately stood.

“Miss Whitlock.”

Claire walked closer.

“I heard you were taking breaks now.”

“I was feeling dizzy.”

“Pregnancy must be convenient.”

Ben stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to her like that.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“And who gave you permission to speak?”

Ben lowered his eyes.

Hannah moved between them.

“He’s a child.”

Claire smiled.

“That’s exactly why someone should teach him his place.”

The words were cold.

Hannah felt something inside her tighten.

She had learned something about people like Claire.

Cruel people rarely started with violence.

They started with permission.

A small insult.

A quiet humiliation.

A reminder that they believed they were untouchable.

Claire turned toward Hannah’s stomach.

“Daniel has always been generous. Too generous, sometimes.”

Hannah said nothing.

Claire continued.

“Especially with people who know how to gain sympathy.”

The accusation hung in the air.

Hannah’s fingers curled.

“You should be careful what you imply.”

For the first time, Claire looked genuinely surprised.

The maid had answered back.

Not loudly.

Not disrespectfully.

But firmly.

Claire stepped closer.

“You forget who owns this house.”

“No,” Hannah replied.

“I remember exactly.”

The silence between them became heavy.

Claire studied her.

Then smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“Tonight’s engagement party will be interesting.”

Hannah felt a chill.

“What do you mean?”

Claire leaned closer.

“Everyone will finally see what kind of person you really are.”

Then she walked away.

Ben watched her leave.

“Mrs. Hannah?”

“Yes?”

“Why does she hate you?”

Hannah looked toward the hallway.

Because Claire knew something.

Or feared something.

Something Hannah herself still hadn’t uncovered.

“I don’t know,” she whispered.

But deep down…

She knew the answer was coming.

And when it arrived, it would destroy more than Claire’s engagement.

It would expose the darkest secret hidden inside the Carver family.
