Chapter 9 - The Daughter Born During the Raid
The ambulance carried Kiora to Emory University Hospital.
She was thirty-one weeks pregnant.
Doctors administered medication to slow labor and protect the baby’s lungs.
Marcus arrived two hours later.
He stood outside the room until Kiora asked for him.
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Missing.”
“Did you save the servers?”
“Yes.”
“The evidence?”
“Enough to freeze every offshore account we found.”
Kiora pressed one hand against her stomach.
The contractions continued.
“What about the baby?”
“The doctors are doing everything they can.”
Marcus sat beside her.
“Julian wanted to name her Eleanor.”
Kiora looked at him.
“He told you?”
“He asked whether it would hurt me.”
“What did you say?”
“I said names are not graves.”
“They can belong to the living.”
Kiora had chosen the name Mira Eleanor Bennett Vale.
Mira because Julian said she arrived during the darkest period of their lives and still felt like a miracle.
Eleanor because history deserved something gentler than disappearance.
Labor continued through the next day.
At 4:17 in the morning, Mira was born.
She weighed three pounds and nine ounces.
Her cry was small.
Strong enough.
Doctors carried her to the neonatal intensive care unit.
Kiora saw her daughter for only seconds.
A tiny face.
Dark hair.
Hands opening against the bright hospital light.
Then Mira disappeared behind double doors.
Kiora lay still while grief and relief fought inside her.
Julian should have been there.
Instead, Marcus sat beside the empty chair where her husband belonged.
“You protected her,” he said.
“No.”
“She arrived because my body could not keep her longer.”
“You crossed a burning building with her.”
“You faced Vanessa.”
“You opened the vault.”
“I also took risks.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
“Protection does not require pretending every choice was perfect.”
The honesty steadied her.
Vanessa appeared on television that afternoon.
She claimed Kiora’s early labor proved reckless conduct.
Her attorney released a statement saying Vanessa had traveled abroad for medical treatment.
Federal records showed no legal departure.
Agent Reed believed she remained in the United States.
Owen Drake was arrested near Atlanta.
He had attempted to enter the backup warehouse after the raid.
Faced with murder-conspiracy charges, he began talking.
Vanessa paid him to install the defective fuel component.
She told him Julian planned to expose national-security violations and would destroy thousands of jobs.
Drake expected the boat to lose power.
He claimed he did not know it would explode.
The replacement part had been modified beyond his instructions.
Someone else added an incendiary device.
That person was Conrad Pike, Vale International’s chief financial officer.
Pike disappeared after the board meeting.
The financial backup revealed he authorized payments and controlled the deletion program.
He also held the only emergency access card to the Vale family’s coastal estate.
The place Julian’s boat launched from.
Agent Reed sent a team.
Inside the estate, they found Vanessa.
