Chapter 17 - The Verdict

The courtroom filled within minutes.

Vanessa stood beside her attorneys.

Kiora sat between Evelyn and Marcus.

Charles remained two rows behind them.

The clerk read the verdicts.

Guilty of conspiracy to murder Julian Vale.

Guilty of attempted murder connected to the hospital fire.

Guilty of aggravated assault against Kiora.

Guilty of securities fraud.

Guilty of insurance fraud.

Guilty of medical-record tampering.

Guilty of obstruction.

Guilty of kidnapping Charles.

Guilty of destruction of corporate evidence.

Vanessa did not move.

Conrad received a separate conviction after withdrawing his cooperation challenge.

Owen Drake and Dr. Hale were sentenced under plea agreements.

At Vanessa’s sentencing, former employees spoke.

Families harmed by false charities spoke.

Patients whose medical records had been weaponized spoke.

Charles spoke about Julian.

“I spent years believing I could protect both children by refusing to choose truth over peace.”

“There was no peace.”

“There was only delay.”

Marcus spoke next.

“I built a company that allowed private power to hide behind family loyalty.”

“Vanessa used that structure criminally.”

“I helped create the structure.”

He did not ask the judge for mercy.

He did not request cruelty.

Kiora spoke last.

“Mira will grow up knowing her aunt existed.”

“She will know Vanessa was intelligent, capable, and loved by people who failed to stop her.”

“She will also know love does not erase responsibility.”

“I do not ask for revenge.”

“I ask for a sentence that recognizes how many lives became tools inside Vanessa’s ambition.”

The judge imposed life imprisonment with the possibility of review only after forty years.

Additional financial and assault sentences ran consecutively.

Vanessa turned toward Kiora.

“You took everything.”

Kiora shook her head.

“You spent it.”

Deputies approached.

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

He raised no hand.

Offered no final rescue.

She was led away.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps.

One asked Kiora whether Mira had won the Vale empire.

Kiora looked at the camera.

“My daughter did not win a company.”

“She survived being treated like one.”

Then she carried Mira toward the waiting car.
