Chapter 15 - The Trial of Vanessa Vale
Vanessa’s trial began fourteen months after the courthouse attack.
The prosecution presented the financial fraud first.
Offshore accounts.
False charities.
Deleted servers.
The insurance policy.
Then came Julian’s boat.
Owen Drake testified about the fuel-system change.
Conrad described adding the incendiary device.
Dr. Hale described the false paternity and psychological records.
Charles testified about warning Vanessa.
He did not excuse himself.
“I gave her information she used to kill my son.”
“Did you intend Julian to die?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“Did you know Vanessa was desperate to stop him?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you tell her?”
“Because I believed losing the company would be worse than frightening him.”
Charles looked toward Kiora.
“I was wrong.”
Vanessa’s attorney attacked his credibility.
“You voted to remove your own daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You now blame her to protect yourself.”
“No.”
“I blame myself for helping her.”
The distinction weakened the defense.
Marcus testified next.
Vanessa watched him without expression.
He described the false competency order and Swiss residence.
Her attorney asked whether his stroke affected memory.
Marcus answered calmly.
“It affected my balance.”
“It did not invent bank transfers, forged signatures, or recorded calls.”
Kiora testified for two days.
She described the marriage.
The accident.
The trust challenges.
The courthouse attack.
The hospital fire.
The genetic manipulation.
Vanessa’s attorney approached her with the black briefcase sealed inside an evidence bag.
“You refused a settlement worth three million dollars.”
“Yes.”
“You knew litigation could damage Vale International.”
“Yes.”
“You continued while pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“Did you consider the stress to your child?”
“Every day.”
“Yet you entered an abandoned hospital.”
“To recover evidence related to my husband’s murder.”
“You could have allowed police to handle it.”
“I went with police.”
“You traveled to Atlanta during pregnancy.”
“With federal agents and a doctor.”
“Then your daughter was born prematurely.”
“Yes.”
The attorney paused.
“Do you accept responsibility for that decision?”
Kiora looked toward the jury.
“I accept that my choices carried risk.”
“I do not accept that Vanessa’s crimes become my fault because I responded to them.”
The attorney changed direction.
“You benefited financially from Julian’s death.”
“So did Vanessa’s insurance policy.”
The courtroom became silent.
“No further questions.”
Julian’s final recording played last.
Vanessa’s voice filled the courtroom.
You should have taken the settlement.
She closed her eyes.
For the first time, she looked less powerful than exhausted.
