Chapter 10 - The Siege at the Coastal Estate

Charles had gone to the coastal estate after receiving a message from Vanessa.
She claimed she wanted to surrender privately.
Instead, Conrad took him hostage.
Federal agents surrounded the property.
Vanessa appeared in an upstairs window.
She demanded safe passage in exchange for her father.
Marcus watched the live feed from the hospital conference room.
Kiora remained near the NICU.
She could not leave Mira.
She also could not stop thinking about Charles.
He had failed Julian.
He had helped Vanessa.
He had also finally testified and voted against her.
People did not become disposable because accountability arrived late.
Agent Reed spoke through the estate phone.
“Release Charles.”
Vanessa laughed.
“He chose Julian.”
“He chose the company.”
“He chose everyone except me.”
Marcus leaned toward the microphone.
“No.”
“He protected you your entire life.”
“He protected what I built.”
“He allowed you to call cruelty leadership.”
“That was his failure.”
Vanessa’s voice changed.
“You always loved Julian more.”
“I trusted him more.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“It felt the same.”
The siege continued for hours.
Conrad attempted to access offshore funds from inside the house.
The accounts had been frozen.
Vanessa’s empire had already disappeared.
She had only the hostage and the story she told herself.
Kiora entered the conference room through a secure video call.
Agent Reed tried to stop the connection.
Marcus allowed it.
Vanessa saw Kiora’s face on the screen.
“You should be with your baby.”
“She is safe.”
“No thanks to you.”
“No.”
“Thanks to doctors.”
“People who value life more than control.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think the child makes you powerful?”
“No.”
“She makes your fraud impossible.”
“That is different.”
Conrad shouted from the background.
“They are tracing the network.”
Vanessa looked toward him.
For the first time, the alliance fractured.
Conrad had expected money.
Vanessa had expected loyalty.
Neither had anything left to offer.
Charles moved while they argued.
He struck Conrad’s wrist.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Agents entered through the lower doors.
Conrad ran toward the marina.
Vanessa grabbed Charles and held a knife against his throat.
The same briefcase lay open on a table behind her.
Inside were passports, cash, and Mira’s forged birth documents.
Vanessa had named herself legal guardian.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Let him go.”
“You will send me to prison.”
“Yes.”
“You would destroy your granddaughter?”
“I would stop you from destroying everyone else.”
Vanessa pressed the blade harder.
Charles looked toward the camera.
“Father.”
“I am sorry.”
Then he drove his elbow backward.
Vanessa lost her grip.
A tactical officer fired a nonlethal round.
She fell.
Conrad reached the dock.
He started a speedboat using Julian’s old launch key.
The engine moved thirty yards from shore.
Then flames erupted beneath the console.
Conrad had activated the same modified fuel system used to kill Julian.
The boat exploded.
Rescue crews pulled him from the water alive but severely burned.

Vanessa watched from the ground as agents handcuffed her.
The weapon she built for her brother had nearly killed her final accomplice.
