Chapter 8 - The Destruction Protocol

Technicians disconnected the server system from the network.

The deletion continued.

A program had been installed inside the company’s infrastructure months earlier.

It activated automatically when Vanessa’s executive credentials were suspended.

Marcus watched data disappear from the boardroom screens.

“She prepared this.”

Evelyn looked toward the directors.

“She prepared to destroy the company if she lost control.”

Backup servers existed in three locations.

Two had already been corrupted.

The third sat beneath a distribution warehouse outside Atlanta.

Vanessa’s security team controlled access.

Marcus contacted federal investigators.

The financial fraud now crossed state lines and involved public-company records.

Special Agent Aaron Reed arrived by afternoon.

He secured the building and separated the directors.

Charles surrendered his devices.

Two other board members tried to leave.

Agents stopped them.

Kiora remained in a private office while the baby shifted restlessly.

She had begun experiencing tightening across her abdomen.

Not painful.

Frequent.

A nurse on the phone advised hydration and rest.

Kiora drank water and continued reviewing Julian’s files.

The second drive contained partial access codes for the Atlanta backup.

Julian anticipated Vanessa’s deletion system.

He created a physical recovery token.

The token was hidden inside his wedding ring.

Kiora wore the ring on a chain beneath her dress.

She removed it.

A tiny strip of metal slid from the inner band.

Marcus stared at it.

“He carried the key with him.”

“He gave me the ring before leaving for the marina.”

“Why?”

“He said the band felt tight.”

Kiora remembered laughing at him.

Julian never removed his wedding ring.

He had known someone might search his body.

He placed the recovery key in the one object Vanessa would return to Kiora without examining closely.

Agent Reed arranged a secured trip to Atlanta.

Kiora intended to go.

Everyone objected.

She placed the ring key on the table.

“The system may require my voice or fingerprint.”

“Julian built the security around our marriage records.”

Marcus looked toward her stomach.

“You are having contractions.”

“They are not regular.”

“That is not reassuring.”

Kiora looked at him.

“If Vanessa destroys the backup, she destroys the financial evidence.”

“And thousands of employees lose pensions, contracts, and legal claims.”

“I am going.”

Agent Reed approved travel by medical transport with a physician present.

The convoy reached the warehouse after midnight.

Federal agents removed Vanessa’s guards.

The backup vault sat beneath the loading floor.

Kiora inserted the ring key.

A voice prompt asked a question.

WHAT DID YOU PROMISE BENEATH THE OAK TREE?

Kiora closed her eyes.

Julian proposed beneath an oak tree behind the hospital where she worked.

He had asked what kind of marriage she wanted.

She answered with three words.

“No hidden rooms.”

Kiora spoke the phrase.

The vault opened.

Inside were servers, physical ledgers, and a sealed video recorder.

Technicians began copying the files.

Agent Reed opened the financial records.

Vale International had not merely lost money.

Vanessa created false charities to move funds.

One foundation claimed to provide maternity care for low-income women.

It never treated a single patient.

Kiora looked at the transfers.

More than eighty million dollars had moved through the foundation.

One payment went to Owen Drake.

The mechanic.

Another went to a private clinic.

The clinic had created a medical file under Kiora’s name.

It described a previous miscarriage, depression, and possible substance abuse.

All false.

Vanessa had prepared to challenge Kiora’s motherhood before Julian died.

The room blurred.

Pain tightened across Kiora’s abdomen.

This contraction did not fade.

Warm fluid ran down her leg.

The doctor reached her first.

“Kiora.”

“Your water just broke.”
