Chapter 5 - The Fire Below the Operating Room

Detective Torres moved everyone toward the emergency stairwell.
The door would not open.
An electronic lock had sealed it from the other side.
Smoke thickened near the ceiling.
Kiora covered her mouth.
Her daughter shifted violently beneath her ribs.
Marcus examined the old hospital plans mounted beside the operating room.
“There was a surgical transport elevator.”
“The shaft connected to the basement.”
Evelyn pulled at the elevator doors.
“They are locked.”
Marcus used his cane against the seam.
The doors opened several inches.
Detective Torres forced them wider.
The elevator car was gone.
Only a dark shaft remained.
A maintenance ladder ran along one side.
Kiora looked down.
“I cannot climb that far.”
Marcus pointed toward a manual platform folded into the wall.
The hospital once lowered medical equipment through the shaft.
The platform could support two people.
The release wheel was rusted.
Torres and Marcus turned it together.
The platform unfolded.
Kiora and Evelyn stepped onto it.
Torres used the manual brake to lower them.
Smoke followed from above.
Halfway down, the cable jerked.
The platform tilted.
Kiora grabbed the railing.
Evelyn wrapped one arm around her waist.
The brake line had begun to fail.
Marcus remained above.
“Keep lowering.”
“It may snap,” Torres shouted.
“Then move before it does.”
The platform descended another floor.
The cable broke.
Evelyn and Kiora fell six feet onto the basement landing.
Pain shot through Kiora’s knees.
Her hands covered her stomach immediately.
The baby moved.
Strong.
Alive.
Detective Torres climbed down the ladder.
Marcus followed more slowly.
The basement corridor led toward the ambulance bay.
Flames blocked the main exit.
A small laundry tunnel opened beneath the loading dock.
They crawled through darkness.
Marcus struggled to breathe.
Kiora stopped beside him.
“You need to move.”
“I am slowing you.”
“We move together.”
He looked at her.
“You sound like Julian.”
“Julian would have tried to carry everyone and made the situation worse.”
Marcus laughed despite the smoke.
The tunnel ended behind a metal grate.
Torres kicked it open.
Cold rain struck their faces.
Firefighters reached them moments later.
The hospital burned behind them.
The cardiac wing collapsed before crews contained the flames.
The silver drive survived inside the evidence bag.
At the ambulance, a paramedic checked Kiora and the baby.
No immediate distress.
Marcus required oxygen but refused transport until Kiora agreed to go too.
Detective Torres approached.
“The fire system was activated remotely.”
“The control signal came from a Vale security terminal.”
“Can you prove Vanessa used it?” Evelyn asked.
“Not yet.”
“But we recovered the call recording from the intercom.”
Marcus looked toward the burning building.
“She will claim the voice was fabricated.”
“She has spent years preparing explanations.”
Kiora looked at the sealed drive.
“Then we stop relying on her words.”
At the hospital, forensic technicians opened Julian’s files.
The first folder contained insurance records.
Vale International had taken a two-hundred-million-dollar key-person policy on Julian.
Vanessa was the company officer who authorized it.
The second folder contained maintenance reports from Julian’s boat.
The fuel line had been replaced three days before the explosion.
The replacement part carried a defect notice.
The mechanic signed Owen Drake’s name.
The final file contained a video.
Julian sat inside the boat cabin.
His face looked exhausted.
“If you are seeing this, Vanessa has already decided I am worth more dead than alive.”
He held up a contract.
“She is not working alone.”
May you like
Then he said a name none of them expected.
“My father helped her.”
