Chapter 2 - The Child Who Controlled an Empire

The hospital placed Kiora beneath observation for six hours.

The baby’s heartbeat remained strong.

The impact had bruised Kiora’s ribs but caused no immediate damage to the pregnancy.

Dr. Maya Levin warned that stress could trigger early contractions.

“You need rest.”

Kiora almost laughed.

For eight months, everyone had told her to rest while they tried to take apart her life.

Vanessa’s attorneys challenged Julian’s will.

The board froze Kiora’s household accounts.

Vale security removed her from the family estate.

Reporters waited outside her apartment.

Now Vanessa had struck her inside a courthouse.

Rest seemed like a privilege reserved for people no one was hunting.

Marcus remained in the hallway during the examination.

He refused private medical details.

He asked only whether Kiora and the baby were safe.

When the doctor allowed visitors, he entered carrying a paper cup of water.

“You disappeared,” Kiora said.

Marcus sat beside the bed.

“I was removed.”

“Vanessa said you suffered a stroke.”

“I suffered a mild stroke.”

“She arranged for a private physician to declare me incompetent.”

“Then she sent me to a rehabilitation residence in Switzerland controlled by one of her companies.”

Kiora stared at him.

“You were being held there?”

“Not with chains.”

“With legal documents, medication, and guards who called themselves nurses.”

“How did you leave?”

“Evelyn found me.”

Kiora looked toward her attorney.

Evelyn stood near the window with a thick folder beneath one arm.

“Julian contacted me before the accident,” she said.

“He believed Vanessa had manipulated Marcus’s medical records.”

“He asked me to investigate if anything happened to him.”

Kiora’s throat tightened.

Julian had known he was in danger.

He never told her.

Marcus placed a small silver drive on the table.

“Julian sent this to me three hours before his boat exploded.”

The device contained board minutes, account transfers, and private recordings.

Vanessa had moved almost four hundred million dollars from Vale International into offshore companies.

She had also changed the ownership structure of Julian’s shares.

If Julian died without a child, his voting power transferred temporarily to Vanessa.

If he had a legal heir, the shares remained inside an independent trust until that child turned twenty-five.

Kiora placed one hand over her stomach.

“That is why she challenged the baby.”

Marcus nodded.

“Your daughter is not only Julian’s child.”

“She is the barrier between Vanessa and permanent control.”

Kiora looked toward Evelyn.

“Vanessa claims Julian changed the will.”

“The signature is forged,” Evelyn said.

“We can prove Julian was on a recorded medical call when the document was supposedly signed in New York.”

“Then why did the court schedule today’s settlement hearing?”

“Because Vanessa controls the company’s legal department.”

“She filed six challenges in three jurisdictions.”

“She does not need to win every case.”

“She needs to exhaust you before the baby is born.”

Kiora looked at Marcus.

“What proof do you have about Julian’s death?”

Marcus’s face changed.

“Not enough yet.”

The drive contained a recording of Vanessa speaking with Chief Financial Officer Conrad Pike.

They discussed “removing Julian before the trust became irreversible.”

Vanessa’s attorneys would call the phrase corporate language.

There was no direct order to sabotage the boat.

No confession.

Then Marcus opened another file.

Security footage showed Vanessa’s private mechanic entering Julian’s marina the night before the explosion.

The mechanic carried a black tool case.

The next morning, Julian’s fuel system failed offshore.

Kiora’s heartbeat accelerated.

“Who is the mechanic?”

“Owen Drake.”

“Where is he?”

“He disappeared two days after Julian died.”

Evelyn placed a photograph on the bed.

Drake stood outside a small airport.

Beside him was Vanessa.

The photograph had been taken three days earlier.

Vanessa had found him before Marcus did.

A nurse entered with discharge papers.

Kiora reached for her shoes.

Marcus stopped her.

“You are not returning to your apartment.”

“It is my home.”

“It is also being watched.”

“By whom?”

His phone vibrated.

He read the message.

Then he turned the screen toward her.

A security camera showed two masked men forcing open Kiora’s apartment door.
