Chapter 6 - The Father Who Chose the Company
Charles Vale arrived at the hospital before sunrise.
He was Julian and Vanessa’s father.
Marcus’s only surviving son.
For eight months, Charles had presented himself as a grieving parent trapped between two children.
He supported Vanessa’s leadership.
He also told Kiora privately that he believed in her marriage.
Now Julian’s video named him.
Charles entered Marcus’s room carrying no attorney.
He looked toward the drive on the table.
“You found the hospital.”
Marcus removed the oxygen tube from beneath his nose.
“You knew about it.”
“I knew Julian stored documents there.”
“Did you know Vanessa set the fire?”
“No.”
“Did you help her kill him?”
Charles closed his eyes.
Kiora stood beside the window.
Her entire body felt cold.
Charles looked at her.
“I did not know she intended to kill Julian.”
“That is not an answer.”
He sat down.
Vale International had been close to financial collapse two years earlier.
Vanessa concealed massive losses from the board.
Julian discovered the missing money.
He planned to report the fraud and force a restructuring.
That would destroy the family’s controlling interest.
Charles persuaded Julian to wait.
“He wanted to protect employees,” Charles said.
“He agreed to give me thirty days.”
“What did you do with those days?” Marcus asked.
“I told Vanessa.”
Kiora stared at him.
“You warned her.”
“I believed she would correct the accounts.”
“She created an insurance policy.”
“I did not know about that.”
“She changed his boat maintenance.”
“I did not know.”
“She challenged his marriage before his body was cold.”
Charles lowered his head.
“I knew she would fight the trust.”
“You helped with the forged will?” Evelyn asked.
“No.”
“But I signed a board statement questioning Julian’s judgment.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa said it would pressure him to negotiate.”
Every person around Vanessa seemed guilty enough to help and innocent enough to sleep.
Charles had not planted the defective part.
He had provided the warning that made the murder possible.
Marcus looked older than he had in the courthouse.
“You chose the company over your son.”
“I chose thousands of jobs.”
“You chose your shares.”
Charles stood.
“You think morality pays payroll?”
“No.”
“But neither does murder.”
Kiora stepped closer.
“What happened the night Julian died?”
Charles looked toward her.
“Vanessa called me after the explosion.”
“She said Julian ignored the defect warning.”
“What warning?”
“A notice supposedly sent to his email.”
“The police found it.”
Evelyn checked the digital evidence.
The warning email was sent thirty minutes after the boat left the marina.
The timestamp had been altered inside the printed report.
Vanessa created a defense before the Coast Guard arrived.
Charles had known the email was late.
He remained silent.
“Why?” Kiora asked.
“Because Vanessa said exposing her would destroy the company.”
“And Julian was already dead.”
The words sounded like his reasoning.
Not his grief.
Marcus turned away from him.
“Leave.”
“Father.”
“You will testify.”
“If you refuse, I will release the recording you just gave us.”
Charles looked toward the room’s security camera.
Marcus had recorded the confession.
His son’s face changed.

He had returned to stop forgiving his family.
