Kiora stared at the doctor.
“That is impossible.”
Dr. Levin placed the laboratory report on the desk.
“The marker suggests the recorded paternal sample does not match.”
“What recorded sample?”
“The hospital received a genetic profile from the Vale family medical archive.”
Kiora’s fear changed into suspicion.
“Who submitted it?”
The profile came from Dr. Stephen Hale, a private physician employed by Vanessa.
He claimed it belonged to Julian.
The hospital used it only because Mira needed screening for a hereditary heart condition.
Marcus examined the report.
“Julian’s family sample was stored at Vale Medical.”
“Vanessa controlled the archive.”
Evelyn requested independent testing using verified evidence.
Julian’s preserved blood sample remained with the county medical examiner from the accident investigation.
The result took five days.
Mira was Julian’s biological daughter.
The first genetic profile was false.
Vanessa had prepared another attack.
If the hospital accepted the manipulated profile, she could claim Kiora lied about paternity.
The trust would freeze Mira’s inheritance.

He also revealed that Vanessa created false fertility records before the boating accident.
Her plan was older than anyone realized.
If Julian lived, she would claim Kiora manipulated him with another man’s child.

Kiora looked at Mira inside the incubator.

Marcus stood beside her.
“I am sorry.”
“You did not replace the sample.”
“No.”
“But my company owned the clinic.”
“My family name opened every door Vanessa used.”
Kiora turned toward him.
“Do not make her crimes about your guilt.”
“Then what do I do with it?”
“Build something different.”
Marcus nodded.
That week, the independent board closed Vale Medical’s private family archive.
Records moved under outside control.
Patients were notified of unauthorized access.
Several families discovered their medical information had been used in corporate disputes.
The scandal expanded beyond Kiora.
Former spouses described false evaluations.
Employees described wellness records appearing in promotion decisions.
Vanessa had turned medicine into surveillance across the company.
The trial added charges for medical fraud, records tampering, and conspiracy.
Dr. Hale accepted a plea agreement.
He would testify.
Mira left the hospital two days before Christmas.
Kiora carried her through the doors beneath a pale winter sun.
Marcus waited near the car.
He did not reach for the baby.
