Chapter 7 — The Door That Should Have Stayed Locked

Emily remained frozen.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
She stared at the open doorway.
Her instincts screamed at her to move.
But fear held her still.
Then the shadow disappeared.
Emily grabbed the closest object on the nightstand and slowly walked toward the door.
Her hand reached for the handle.
She opened it.
The hallway was empty.
Only one thing remained.
A small envelope placed on the floor.
Her name was written on it.
Emily.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
Inside was an old newspaper clipping.
The headline made her blood run cold.
LOCAL WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE
Below the headline was a photograph.
Her mother.
Sarah Carter.
Emily covered her mouth.
She knew the story.
Everyone had told her the same thing.
Her mother died in a car accident.
But this article said something different.
Police investigating possible foul play.
Someone had lied to her.
For twenty-five years.
Behind her, a voice spoke.
“You finally found it.”
Emily turned.
Daniel stood there.
His expression changed when he saw the newspaper.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily looked at him.
“Someone left it outside my room.”
Daniel’s face turned serious.
“Emily…”
“What?”
He looked at the article.
“Because this file was supposed to be destroyed.”

And somewhere inside the mansion…
Someone was still watching them.
