Chapter 11 — The Man Who Returned From the Dead

Thomas Harrington had been a ghost for twenty-five years.

A name spoken quietly.

A family secret buried beneath wealth and reputation.

But now he was real.

And he was coming for Emily.

Daniel paced across the library.

“This changes everything.”

Emily looked at him.

“How?”

“Because if Thomas is alive, then every story we were told about the past could be false.”

Margaret sat silently.

She looked older than she had the day before.

Emily noticed.

“You knew.”

Margaret looked up.

“Knew what?”

“That he was alive.”

The elderly woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“I suspected.”

“SUSPECTED?”

Emily’s voice broke.

“My mother died because of this.”

Margaret looked away.

“I spent twenty-five years trying to convince myself I was wrong.”

Emily shook her head.

“You weren’t wrong.”

Nobody answered.

Because the truth had finally arrived.

And it was worse than anyone imagined.

That night, Emily received another message.

Not from Thomas.

From an unknown sender.

A photograph appeared.

It showed her mother.

Sarah.

Standing outside the Harrington mansion.

The date was written below.

Three days before her death.

Then another image appeared.

A man standing beside her.

Emily zoomed in.

Her hands started shaking.

Because she recognized the face.

Not from memory.

From the family portrait.

It was Daniel’s father.

Alive.

Standing beside her mother.

The message underneath said:

Your mother was never alone. Ask Daniel what his father was hiding.

Emily slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And for the first time…

She wondered if Daniel knew more than he admitted.
