Chapter 13 — The Father Who Was Never Gone

The name at the bottom of the letter changed everything.

Thomas Harrington was not hiding anymore.

He wanted them to know he was watching.

He wanted them afraid.

But Emily felt something else.

Anger.

For twenty-five years, she had lived with a story someone else created.

A father who abandoned her.

A mother who struggled alone.

A life built around unanswered questions.

Now she was discovering that almost everything had been a lie.

“I want to find him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father?”

Emily nodded.

“If he is alive, I need to know why he left.”

Daniel understood.

Because it wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about inheritance.

It was about a daughter who had spent her entire life wondering why she wasn’t worth staying for.

Richard Blake, the family attorney, began searching old records.

After several hours, he discovered something hidden.

A hospital record.

Twenty-four years earlier.

A man admitted under a false name.

Daniel looked at the document.

“John Carter.”

Emily’s heart stopped.

“That’s my father.”

Richard nodded.

“He survived an attack.”

“When?”

“Three months after Sarah’s death.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Her father had been alive.

All these years.

Richard continued.

“But someone removed him from the hospital.”

“Who?”

Nobody wanted to answer.

Because they already knew.

Thomas.

That night, Emily received a phone call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice responded.

“Emily.”

She froze.

Because she knew immediately.

The voice sounded older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“Dad?”

A long silence followed.

Then:

“Yes.”

Tears filled her eyes.

She couldn’t speak.

Neither could he.

Twenty-five years of pain existed between two people who had both believed they had lost each other forever.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Emily cried.

“You left me.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

The man on the other end broke down.

“Because Thomas told me if I came near you, you would die.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Her worst fear became reality.

Her father hadn’t abandoned her.

He had been forced away.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because he found me once.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then:

“Thomas.”

Suddenly, a loud sound came from the other end.

A crash.

“Dad?”

No answer.

“Dad!”

The line went dead.

Daniel ran into the room.

“What happened?”

Emily looked at him.

Her face was pale.

“My father found me.”

May you like

A pause.

“And Thomas found him.”
