Chapter 3 — The Woman From The Past

Nobody spoke after Vanessa’s confession.
The mansion that had always represented wealth and elegance suddenly felt like a place filled with secrets.
Margaret slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“Vanessa…”
But Vanessa ignored her.
She looked at Emily.
“You should ask Margaret about your mother.”
Emily turned toward the elderly woman.
“Mrs. Harrington?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That was the moment Emily understood.
Vanessa wasn’t lying about everything.
Some part of this was real.
“What did my mother have to do with your family?”
Margaret looked away.
“Emily…”
“Please.”
Her voice cracked.
“I spent my entire life wondering why my mother refused to talk about this place.”
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Mother.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I thought the past was buried.”
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
“What past?”
Margaret looked at her.
And for the first time, Emily saw something she had never seen before.
Guilt.
“Your mother, Sarah, worked here when she was nineteen.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“She was not just an employee.”
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at Daniel.
Then back at Emily.
“She was family.”
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Vanessa watched with satisfaction.
“Yes.”
Emily stepped back.
“No. My mother was Sarah Carter. She cleaned houses. She worked two jobs. She raised me alone.”
Margaret whispered:
“She did all of that because she was protecting you.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Protecting me from what?”
Before Margaret could answer—
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
A drawer had fallen.
Daniel immediately moved toward the staircase.
“Stay here.”
But Emily followed.
Because after tonight…
She was done being the person everyone kept secrets from.
At the end of the hallway was Margaret’s old private office.
The door was open.
Inside, papers covered the floor.
And on the desk was an old photograph.
Emily picked it up.
Her hands started shaking.
Because the picture showed a young woman.
Her mother.
Standing beside a man Emily had never seen before.
A man wearing a Harrington family ring.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
His face turned pale.
Because he recognized the man.
“My father.”
The room went silent.
Emily stared at him.
“Your father?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
And then he said the words that would change everything.
May you like
“Emily…”
“That man was my grandfather.”
