Chapter 6 — The Person Who Knew Sarah

The security room beneath the Harrington mansion was never meant for family discussions.

It was designed for emergencies.

Broken alarms.

Suspicious activity.

Unwanted visitors.

But that night, it became the place where the Harrington family finally faced the truth.

Daniel stood in front of the monitor while Emily watched beside him.

The footage played again.

Vanessa entering the foyer.

Vanessa opening Emily’s handbag.

Vanessa placing the necklace inside.

But this time, Daniel paused the video.

“Look closer.”

Emily leaned toward the screen.

At first, she saw nothing.

Then Daniel zoomed in.

A reflection appeared in the polished marble floor.

Someone else was there.

Standing outside the camera’s main view.

A person watching.

Waiting.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“Who is that?”

Daniel enlarged the image.

The figure was blurry.

But one thing was clear.

A silver ring on the person’s hand.

A ring with the Harrington family symbol.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“No…”

Daniel looked at her.

“You know who that is?”

Margaret’s hands started shaking.

“I hoped I would never see that ring again.”

Emily turned.

“Who?”

Margaret didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered:

“Thomas.”

Daniel froze.

“My father’s brother?”

Margaret nodded.

Emily looked confused.

“I thought your father was an only child.”

“He was supposed to be.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“But Thomas disappeared twenty-five years ago.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked toward the window.

“Because he knew about Sarah.”

The room became silent.

Emily felt a strange connection to a man she had never met.

A man who had vanished before she even understood the world.

“What did he do?”

Margaret hesitated.

“That is the question everyone avoided.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mother.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Thomas believed your grandfather should have chosen him to inherit everything.”

Emily slowly understood.

“So my mother was a threat.”

Margaret nodded.

“Because if your grandfather acknowledged you…”

“Then I had a claim.”

Nobody spoke.

The pieces were finally connecting.

The necklace.

The letter.

The accusation.

Vanessa did not choose Emily because she was weak.

She chose Emily because Emily was the one person who could destroy the future someone had carefully built.

The next morning, Vanessa finally agreed to speak.

But not in the mansion.

She asked Daniel to meet her in the old greenhouse.

Emily insisted on coming.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“She doesn’t need to be here.”

Daniel answered immediately.

“She does.”

For the first time, Vanessa had no argument.

She looked different.

Not like the confident woman from the party.

Not like the woman who had slapped Emily.

She looked exhausted.

“I didn’t know about Thomas at first,” Vanessa said.

Emily crossed her arms.

“But you knew enough to frame me.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised everyone.

“Why?”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Because I was scared.”

Emily stared at her.

“Of me?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked toward the mansion.

“Of losing everything.”

Daniel frowned.

“You have always had everything.”

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“That’s what you think.”

She turned toward Emily.

“Do you know why I married into this family?”

Emily didn’t answer.

“Because I knew the Harrington name was powerful.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“But I didn’t know how dangerous it was.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t the only one hiding secrets.”

A pause.

“Thomas came back.”

Emily felt a chill.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It’s true.”

She looked at Emily.

“And he was looking for you.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s face became serious.

“Because he believed your grandfather left something for you.”

“What?”

Vanessa whispered:

“The real inheritance.”

That night, Emily couldn’t sleep.

Too many questions filled her mind.

Her mother.

Her grandfather.

The Harrington empire.

The missing uncle.

The inheritance.

Everything she believed about her life was changing.

Then, at 2:13 in the morning…

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Emily almost ignored it.

But something made her answer.

A man’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Emily Carter?”

She froze.

“Yes?”

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Thomas Harrington.”

Emily sat up.

Her heart pounding.

“I know who you are.”

The man sighed.

“Then you know why I’m calling.”

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“I don’t.”

Another pause.

Then Thomas said:

“Because your mother didn’t die naturally.”

Emily stopped breathing.

“What?”

“She was killed because she found out the truth.”

The room went silent.

“Who killed her?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The same person who is still trying to destroy you today.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“Who?”

Thomas whispered:

“Look behind you.”

Emily slowly turned.

The bedroom door was slightly open.

But she knew she had locked it.

A shadow moved in the hallway.

Then the call ended.
