Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind the Camera

Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
Everyone saw it.
The confidence disappeared.
The perfect mask cracked.
“That footage proves nothing,” Vanessa said quickly.
Daniel stared at her.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Her voice became sharper.
“Emily’s bag was open. The necklace was inside. That’s what matters.”
Emily looked down.
Even after the truth appeared, she still felt trapped.
Because Vanessa had not just planted a necklace.
She had planted doubt.
And doubt was harder to remove.
Daniel walked toward the screen.
“Let’s watch the entire recording.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel—”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
But everyone heard the authority behind it.
“The entire recording.”
The footage played.
The guests watched silently.
Emily entered the foyer carrying her cleaning supplies.
She placed her handbag on the small table near the staircase.
She walked away to answer Margaret’s call.
Then Vanessa appeared.
Alone.
She looked around.
She opened Emily’s handbag.
She removed the necklace from a small jewelry box.
Then she placed it inside.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The woman who had accused Emily of theft had been caught creating the crime herself.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Her breathing became faster.
“This doesn’t prove anything.”
Daniel turned.
“It proves everything.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
For the first time that night, Vanessa had nothing to say.
Emily looked at her.
“Why?”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Why did you choose me?”
Vanessa looked at Emily.
And something strange happened.
Her anger returned.
Not because she was caught.
Because Emily had asked the question.
“You really don’t know?”
Emily frowned.
“Know what?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
A bitter laugh.
“You still think this is about a necklace?”
Nobody understood.
Margaret looked confused.
“Vanessa, what are you talking about?”
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
Toward the second floor.
Toward the room where Margaret kept old family records.
“You never told her, did you?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Told her what?”
Vanessa smiled.
“The truth about Emily Carter.”
Emily felt a chill.
“What truth?”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“You’re not just a housekeeper.”
The room froze.
Emily’s heartbeat increased.
“What are you saying?”
Vanessa took a step closer.
“You really don’t remember?”
Daniel looked between them.
“Vanessa, stop.”
But she continued.
“Your mother worked here twenty-five years ago.”
Emily’s face went pale.
She had never told anyone that.
Not even Daniel.
Because it was something she barely knew herself.
Her mother had died when Emily was young.
And before she passed away, she had only left Emily one sentence:
"The Harrington family knows more about your father than they admit."
Vanessa smiled.
“That necklace wasn’t stolen.”
She pointed at Emily.
“It was a message.”
Emily stared at her.
“A message?”
“Yes.”
May you like
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Someone wanted you to find out who you really are.”
