Chapter 10 — Vanessa’s Confession

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stood outside the library door.

The same woman who had humiliated Emily in front of everyone.

The same woman who had placed the necklace inside her handbag.

The same woman who had tried to destroy her reputation.

Now she was asking to come inside.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Your choice.”

Emily stared at the door.

A part of her wanted to refuse.

Wanted to tell Vanessa she had already caused enough damage.

But another part of her needed answers.

“Come in.”

The door opened slowly.

Vanessa entered.

But she was different.

No designer confidence.

No arrogant smile.

No perfect mask.

She looked like someone who had been carrying fear for too long.

“I know you hate me.”

Emily didn’t deny it.

“You tried to ruin my life.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I thought if I destroyed you, I could protect myself.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Protect yourself from Thomas?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Emily folded her arms.

“Start explaining.”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I married into this family, I thought I was joining a powerful dynasty.”

She gave a bitter laugh.

“I didn’t realize I was walking into a war that started before I was even born.”

She looked at the necklace.

“When Thomas came back, he contacted me first.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why you?”

“Because he knew I was ambitious.”

Vanessa’s honesty surprised everyone.

“He knew I wanted power. Money. Status.”

She paused.

“And he used that.”

Emily watched her carefully.

“What did he promise you?”

Vanessa looked away.

“The Harrington empire.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He promised you my family’s company?”

“Yes.”

“And what did you have to do?”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“I had to make sure you never discovered who you were.”

The words hurt.

Even though Emily already suspected it.

Hearing them still felt like another betrayal.

“So I was the threat.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Because if you were recognized as your grandfather’s granddaughter, you would have legal rights.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rights to what?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“The hidden trust.”

Nobody spoke.

Emily frowned.

“What trust?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Your grandfather created a private trust before he died.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It’s real.”

She looked at Emily.

“And it was created for you.”

Emily felt overwhelmed.

Her entire life, she had struggled to pay rent.

She had worked exhausting jobs.

She had worried about bills.

And somewhere…

A secret inheritance existed.

But that wasn’t what hurt most.

It was knowing someone had tried to erase her existence.

Later that evening, Daniel found Emily sitting alone outside.

“You don’t have to believe Vanessa.”

Emily stared at the garden.

“But she told the truth.”

“Some of it.”

Emily looked at him.

“You think she’s still lying?”

“I think Vanessa is someone who survives.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“People like that sometimes tell the truth only when it benefits them.”

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Do you think your family would have ever told me?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That answer hurt.

Because she already knew.

The next morning, the Harrington legal team arrived.

An attorney named Richard Blake entered the mansion carrying a large black folder.

“Miss Carter.”

Emily looked surprised.

“Why are you here?”

Richard placed the folder on the table.

“Because your grandfather’s instructions have finally been triggered.”

Daniel frowned.

“Triggered?”

Richard nodded.

“The conditions were simple.”

He opened the folder.

“The inheritance could only be accessed when three things happened.”

Emily listened carefully.

“What three things?”

Richard looked at her.

“First, the Harrington necklace had to be found.”

He placed a document on the table.

“Second, Sarah Carter’s daughter had to be identified.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“And the third?”

Richard’s expression became serious.

“The person who tried to stop the truth had to reveal themselves.”

Everyone became silent.

Emily slowly turned.

“Vanessa?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Vanessa was only a piece of the plan.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then who?”

Richard looked toward the staircase.

At the portrait of the old Harrington family.

Then he said:

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.”

A pause.

“The person who was supposed to be dead.”

Emily whispered:

“Thomas Harrington.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The room froze.

“Thomas is alive.”

Everyone looked shocked.

Richard opened the folder.

Inside was a recent photograph.

A man standing outside a building.

Older.

Gray hair.

But unmistakable.

Daniel stared.

“My uncle.”

Emily felt a chill.

Because beneath the photograph was a note.

May you like

Written in Thomas’s handwriting.

Emily Carter. You have something that belongs to me.
