Chapter 14 — The Man Behind the Curtain

The search for Emily’s father became a race against time.

Daniel contacted every person he trusted.

Private investigators.

Former employees.

Old family connections.

But every path led to the same wall.

Someone had erased John Carter’s existence.

Bank records.

Medical records.

Employment history.

Everything.

It was as if Emily’s father had never existed.

But Emily knew better.

A person could disappear from documents.

Not from memory.

Not from love.

Not from the pain left behind.

She sat in the library holding the old photograph of her parents.

Her mother was smiling.

Her father was standing beside her.

For the first time, Emily saw something she had never allowed herself to believe.

They looked happy.

Not like people planning to run away.

Like people planning a future.

“He loved her.”

Daniel’s voice came from behind her.

Emily looked up.

“What?”

“Your father.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“He loved your mother.”

Emily touched the photograph.

“Then why did they take everything from them?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he was asking the same question.

That afternoon, Richard Blake returned with new information.

“I found something.”

Everyone gathered in the study.

Richard placed several documents on the table.

“Your grandfather created a second company twenty-five years ago.”

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“It was hidden from the rest of the family.”

Emily looked at the papers.

“What was the company for?”

Richard looked at her.

“Protection.”

“Protection from who?”

Richard hesitated.

“From Thomas.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“He knew.”

Daniel turned.

“Mother?”

“Your grandfather discovered Thomas had been stealing from the company.”

The room went silent.

“How much?”

“Millions.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“And my father?”

Margaret’s voice became weak.

“Your father found out too.”

Emily stared at her.

“So Daniel’s father knew Thomas was a criminal.”

“Yes.”

“And he helped him?”

Margaret looked down.

“That is what we never proved.”

Emily looked at the documents.

“But someone did.”

Richard nodded.

“The second company was created to collect evidence.”

Daniel picked up a folder.

Inside were financial records.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Thomas Harrington.

That night, Emily received another message.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only an address.

And one sentence.

If you want the truth about your father, come alone.

Daniel immediately said no.

“Absolutely not.”

Emily looked at him.

“If I don’t go, I may never find him.”

“It could be a trap.”

“It probably is.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You know that and you’re still going?”

Emily nodded.

“Because my entire life has been controlled by people who thought they knew what was best for me.”

She looked at him.

“I’m done being afraid.”

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“Then you’re not going alone.”

The address led them to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The place looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

Empty rooms.

But someone was waiting.

A man stepped out from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Emily stopped breathing.

Because she had seen his face before.

In the photograph.

In her dreams.

In the memories she barely had.

“Dad?”

The man’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emily.”

She ran toward him.

Twenty-five years of questions disappeared in one moment.

She hugged the father she thought she had lost forever.

John Carter held his daughter tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily cried.

“I thought you left me.”

“I know.”

His voice broke.

“I tried to come back.”

“Why didn’t you?”

John looked over her shoulder.

His expression changed.

Fear returned.

“Because he always found me.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Thomas.”

John nodded.

“He knew everything.”

Emily pulled away.

“Tell me the truth.”

John looked at his daughter.

Then whispered:

“Your mother discovered that Thomas didn’t just steal money.”

A pause.

“He destroyed people.”

Emily felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

John looked toward the dark warehouse.

“He killed anyone who threatened his empire.”

Before anyone could respond…

A slow clap echoed through the building.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped into the light.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Thomas Harrington.

He smiled.

“Family reunions are always emotional.”

Emily stared at him.

The man who had haunted her entire life was finally standing in front of her.

Thomas looked at her.

“You look exactly like Sarah.”

Emily’s voice was cold.

“You killed her.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“No.”

A pause.

“I saved this family from her.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re a monster.”

Thomas laughed softly.

“No, Daniel.”

He looked at him.

“I’m the reason you still have a family name.”

Then he looked back at Emily.

“And now you’re going to give me what your grandfather hid.”

Emily narrowed her eyes.

“What?”

May you like

Thomas smiled.

“The real inheritance.”
