Chapter 18 — Margaret’s Last Secret

The accusation against Margaret changed the atmosphere inside the mansion.

For years, Margaret Harrington had been the person everyone respected.

The woman who held the family together.

The woman who seemed gentle, graceful, and forgiving.

But now every person in the room looked at her differently.

Emily watched her carefully.

“Is it true?”

Margaret didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

“Mrs. Harrington.”

Emily’s voice trembled.

“Did you know my mother was in danger?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Yes.”

The room went completely still.

Daniel looked shocked.

“Mother…”

“I knew Thomas was dangerous.”

Margaret looked at Emily.

“But I never wanted Sarah hurt.”

Emily shook her head.

“Then why didn’t you protect her?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because I was afraid.”

The answer was simple.

And painful.

Emily laughed softly.

“Everyone was afraid.”

She looked around the room.

“My mother wasn’t.”

Nobody spoke.

“Everyone had money. Power. Influence.”

Emily’s voice broke.

“But my mother only had courage.”

Margaret lowered her head.

“You’re right.”

Margaret finally told the story she had hidden for twenty-five years.

After Sarah discovered Thomas’s crimes, she came to Margaret for help.

She had evidence.

Financial records.

Secret accounts.

Proof that Thomas had been stealing from the Harrington empire.

“She wanted to expose him,” Margaret said.

Emily listened silently.

“She believed the truth would protect everyone.”

Margaret’s hands trembled.

“But Thomas knew.”

“How?”

“He had someone inside the family.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Margaret looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Emily felt frustrated.

“After all these years, nobody knows anything?”

Margaret looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“We knew one thing.”

“What?”

Margaret whispered:

“Thomas could only move so freely because someone powerful was protecting him.”

That night, Daniel stayed awake in the study.

His entire understanding of his family had collapsed.

His father had hidden the truth.

His grandmother had stayed silent.

His uncle had destroyed lives.

And the woman he once trusted most had helped cover the first lie.

Emily found him sitting alone.

“You blame yourself.”

Daniel looked up.

“I’m part of this family.”

“That doesn’t make you responsible for their choices.”

He smiled sadly.

“You say that like it’s easy.”

Emily sat across from him.

“No.”

She looked at the old family portrait.

“It isn’t.”

For the first time, they both understood something.

They were not fighting against a single person.

They were fighting against generations of silence.

The next morning, Detective Mason returned.

But this time, he brought unexpected news.

“We found Thomas.”

Everyone stood.

“Where?”

The detective placed a folder down.

“He contacted us.”

Daniel frowned.

“He turned himself in?”

“No.”

The detective looked at Emily.

“He requested a meeting.”

Emily immediately understood.

“He wants me.”

The detective nodded.

“He said he will reveal everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s a trap.”

Emily knew it was.

But she also knew something else.

Thomas had controlled the story for twenty-five years.

The only way to end it…

Was to hear the truth from him.

The meeting took place in an old courthouse.

Thomas sat alone in the interview room.

No lawyers.

No security.

No arrogance.

Just an old man who looked tired.

Emily entered.

He looked up.

“Sarah’s daughter.”

Emily sat across from him.

“You killed my mother.”

Thomas stared at her.

“I ruined many lives.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“Because the truth is more complicated.”

Emily’s eyes hardened.

“People always say that when they don’t want to admit what they did.”

Thomas nodded.

“Fair.”

For the first time, he didn’t argue.

Then he pushed a folder across the table.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Records.

Emily opened them.

Her expression changed.

Because she recognized one name.

Not Thomas.

Not Edward.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Someone nobody suspected.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“The person who ordered your mother’s death…”

Emily looked up.

“Who?”

Thomas met her eyes.

May you like

And said:

“Your own father.”
