Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Secret

Margaret denied it.

Immediately.

“I never helped her.”

Ruiz remained calm.

“Did you communicate with Vanessa about Elena’s appointments?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She organized the baby shower.”

“What about estate documents?”

Margaret hesitated.

“She helped me.”

“Why?”

“Because I trusted her.”

The answer sounded innocent.

Too innocent.

Ruiz showed her the messages.

Vanessa:

When is Elena seeing the specialist?

Margaret:

Thursday at 2. Adrian is in Dallas.

Vanessa:

Perfect.

Margaret had replied with a heart.

She stared at the screenshot.

“I thought she was arranging flowers.”

My anger nearly became laughter.

“Flowers?”

Margaret looked at me.

“She said she wanted to surprise you.”

“And the trust?”

Margaret lowered her head.

“I gave her copies.”

Adrian swore.

“Mom.”

“She told me the attorney needed them.”

“Which attorney?”

Margaret could not answer.

That silence was brutal.

Vanessa had used Margaret.

But Margaret had made herself easy to use.

She wanted Vanessa in the family.

She always had.

I knew that now.

Maybe she never wanted me gone.

But she had spent years treating Vanessa like the daughter-in-law she preferred.

That access became power.

Ruiz asked one final question.

“Did Vanessa ever ask what would happen if Elena lost the baby?”

The room stopped.

Margaret began crying before she answered.

“Yes.”

Adrian stood.

“What did you say?”

“I told her the trust protections would not activate.”

My daughter moved beneath my hand.

A tiny reminder.

Alive.

Safe.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know.”

I believed her.

But ignorance did not erase consequence.

Vanessa had asked the exact financial question she needed answered.

And Margaret had given her the answer.
