Chapter 14 - The Prepared Lie
The prepared statement changed the case.
Vanessa could no longer argue that her explanation after the fall came from panic.
Someone had written it in advance.
Gregory blamed Vanessa.
Vanessa blamed Gregory.
The partnership began to break.
Ruiz questioned Gregory again.
This time, his attorney wanted a deal.
He admitted helping Vanessa access documents.
He admitted disabling cameras before previous family events.
He admitted discussing how the trust changed after the baby’s birth.
Then Ruiz asked:
“Did you know she planned to push Elena?”
Gregory said no.
Ruiz showed him:
Stairs remain simplest.
He looked away.
“That could mean anything.”
Then:
Post-Incident Statement.
His laptop.
His file.
His metadata.
Gregory began sweating.
Finally, he said:
“I thought she was going to frighten Elena.”
Ruiz stared at him.
“How?”
“She said Elena would leave if she believed Adrian chose Vanessa.”
“That was the plan?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
Gregory looked toward his attorney.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa found out Elena had contacted police.”
My stomach turned when Ruiz told me.
“How?”
“We don’t know.”
Only a handful of people knew.
Ruiz.
Me.
Adrian.
Rosa.
And one other person.
Margaret.
Again.
Margaret swore she had told no one.
This time, I believed her.
Then Rosa remembered something.
The night after I first met Ruiz, Vanessa visited the mansion unexpectedly.
She went into Margaret’s study.
Margaret’s calendar lay open.
Ruiz’s name was written beside my appointment.
Vanessa had not needed anyone to betray me.
She had seen enough.
That meant the staircase push was not only about the trust.
It was about evidence.
