Chapter 1 - The Fall That Wasn’t the End

The front doors opened before Vanessa finished crying.
Detective Elena Ruiz entered first.
Two officers followed her.
Behind them came Adrian Howard.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Elena saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the theatrical panic Vanessa had performed after the fall.
Adrian’s eyes went immediately to his pregnant wife on the marble floor.
“Elena.”
Vanessa rushed toward him.
“Adrian, thank God.”
She reached for his arm.
He stepped away.
That single movement silenced the entire foyer.
Margaret Howard stared at her son.
“Adrian?”
Vanessa began talking faster.
“Elena attacked me.”
“She was hysterical.”
“She accused me of trying to destroy her marriage.”
“I pushed her away because I was scared.”
Detective Ruiz raised one hand.
“Stop.”
Vanessa turned.
“You need to call an ambulance.”
“We already did.”
Ruiz looked toward Elena.
“Elena, you can open your eyes now.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
My eyes opened.
I did not sit up immediately.
I had hit the padded section of the landing exactly where we had planned.
My body hurt.
My heart was racing.
But my daughter moved beneath my ribs.
That tiny movement gave me enough strength to smile.
Vanessa backed away.
“You were pretending?”
“No.”
I slowly pushed myself onto one elbow.
“You really pushed me.”
Her face turned white.
Adrian moved toward me.
I raised one hand.
“Not yet.”
He stopped.
That confused everyone.
Then Detective Ruiz looked toward the ceiling.
“Mr. Howard, did you activate the archive?”
Adrian nodded.
“Every camera.”
Vanessa looked up.
For the first time, she noticed the tiny red indicator above the staircase.
Then another beside the library.
Another over the foyer.
Every camera in the mansion had been turned on forty minutes before she arrived.
Not only video.
Audio.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You set me up.”
I finally sat upright.
“No.”
I held one hand over my stomach.
“I gave you a chance not to do exactly what you came here to do.”
The ambulance sirens grew louder outside.
Detective Ruiz stepped toward Vanessa.
“And you chose for yourself.”
Vanessa’s eyes darted toward the front door.
Two officers moved quietly into her path.
Then Margaret whispered:
“What exactly did she come here to do?”
I looked at Adrian.
He looked at his mother.
Neither of us wanted to answer.
Because the push was only the final move.

The real plan had started three months earlier.
And Margaret Howard had unknowingly signed the first document that made it possible.
