Chapter 16 - Behind the Portrait

The archive was hidden behind a portrait of William Howard.
Vanessa had access because Margaret once gave her a spare study key.
Behind the frame was a recessed wall safe.
Adrian had never known it existed.
William had installed it decades earlier.
Vanessa discovered it while helping Margaret inventory family records.
Inside were three drives.
Two notebooks.
Copies of trust documents.
And one sealed plastic envelope.
Lucas Mercer’s phone.
Hannah began crying when she saw it.
Police had searched for that phone after his death.
Vanessa told investigators she had never found it.
Five years later, it sat behind a Howard family portrait.
The phone was damaged.
Not destroyed.
Forensics recovered several files.
Messages to Hannah.
Photographs of Gregory near the terrace camera.
A draft email to an attorney.
Then one audio recording.
Lucas’s voice.
“You changed the beneficiary paperwork.”
Vanessa:
“You’re paranoid.”
Lucas:
“I have copies.”
Vanessa:
“No one believes you anymore.”
Then movement.
A door.
Wind.
Lucas saying:
“Stay away from me.”
The recording ended before the fall.
No direct recording of death.
But enough to prove Vanessa lied about being asleep.
Enough to prove confrontation.
Enough to prove she had hidden evidence afterward.
Hannah sat beside me.
“She took five years.”
I understood what she meant.
Five years of people believing the wrong story.
Five years of grief contaminated by doubt.
I took her hand.
Then Ruiz opened one of Vanessa’s notebooks.
Most pages were financial.
Then she found a line dated one week before my fall.
E is smarter than Lucas.
Below it:
Need her to look unstable before anything happens.
Below that:
Family already believes it.
My throat closed.
That was the deepest betrayal.
Vanessa’s plan worked because she understood exactly which weakness to use.
Not marble.
May you like
Not gravity.
Family prejudice.
