Chapter 18 - The Offer

Vanessa’s attorneys requested negotiations.
The evidence had become overwhelming.
The staircase footage.
The prepared statement.
The trust calculations.
Gregory’s cooperation.
Lucas’s phone.
Vanessa’s notebook.
Her own courtroom remark.
She still denied intending serious harm.
But denial was becoming expensive.
Gregory accepted a plea agreement on financial crimes, evidence tampering, and conspiracy-related charges.
He agreed to testify about Lucas and the Howard plot.
Vanessa refused the first offer.
Then the prosecution added new charges related to tampering with evidence in Lucas’s case.
Her confidence finally cracked.
She requested to speak with me.
I refused.
Then reconsidered.
Not alone.
Ruiz.
My attorney.
A recorded room.
Vanessa sat across from me behind glass.
She looked smaller.
Not weaker.
Just stripped of the audience she used to control.
“You won.”
I shook my head.
“This was never a game.”
She laughed.
“You always say the right thing.”
“No.”
“I learned to say the true thing.”
Her eyes moved toward my stomach.
“You think Adrian chose you?”
“This has nothing to do with him choosing me.”
“It always did.”
There it was.
The oldest wound.
Vanessa believed I had stolen a life she deserved.
Adrian.
The mansion.
The name.
The baby.
I asked:
“Did you push Lucas?”
Her face changed.
Ruiz leaned forward.
Vanessa looked at the camera.
Then at me.
“I didn’t mean for him to die.”
Nobody moved.
My pulse stopped.
Vanessa continued.
“He was leaving.”
“He grabbed his phone.”
“I tried to take it.”
“He stepped backward.”
Ruiz spoke.
“Did you touch him?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Hannah finally had her answer.
Not every detail.
But enough.
Then Vanessa looked at me.
“And you knew I might do the same thing.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
May you like
“I knew you might reveal who you were.”
The distinction mattered.
