Chapter 13 - The Grandfather’s Warning
Adrian’s grandfather, William Howard, had never trusted Vanessa’s family.
The letter said so plainly.
He believed Vanessa’s father had tried to pressure him into a land partnership.
William refused.
Then wrote:
No member of the Vale or Bennett families is to receive administrative authority over Howard property without independent review.
Vanessa’s legal surname had been Bennett before her mother remarried.
Margaret had forgotten.
Or perhaps never understood why the warning existed.
William continued:
Gregory Vale is competent but ambitious.
Do not confuse service with loyalty.
Adrian read that line three times.
His grandfather had seen Gregory clearly.
Everyone else eventually forgot.
At the bottom was one final instruction.
If a Howard descendant was endangered because of trust assets, management authority transferred temporarily to an independent fiduciary.
Not Adrian.
Not Margaret.
Not Vanessa.
Not Gregory.
An outside firm.
The entire conspiracy had been pointless.
Even if I had lost the baby.
Even if Adrian had been incapacitated.
Vanessa and Gregory never would have controlled the assets directly.
They had been planning around an incomplete copy of the trust.
I almost laughed.
“They did all of this based on the wrong document.”
Margaret nodded slowly.
“Vanessa had the family summary.”
“Not the sealed amendment.”
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
“So the entire plan was impossible.”
Financially, yes.
But that made the danger worse.
Vanessa had almost destroyed lives for something she never could have possessed.
Ruiz smiled without humor when we told her.
“People do terrible things for imagined rewards.”
Then she said:
“We found something on Gregory’s laptop.”
A document titled:
POST-INCIDENT STATEMENT.
It had been created two weeks before the staircase incident.
The first line read:
Elena became emotionally unstable during pregnancy.
The second:
Vanessa attempted to calm her.
The third:
May you like
A tragic fall followed.
The accident story existed before the accident.
