Chapter 12 - Adrian Chooses
The Howard board met without me.
Adrian attended.
So did Margaret.
Gregory had served as secretary of several family entities.
His arrest created financial chaos.
Accounts required review.
Property contracts had to be frozen.
Then an older board member suggested something Adrian did not expect.
“Elena should temporarily leave the mansion.”
Adrian stared at him.
“Why?”
“Public perception.”
There it was.
The family disease.
Appearance before truth.
The board member continued.
“There is an active criminal case.”
“Against Vanessa and Gregory.”
“Your wife participated in a controlled operation.”
“To protect herself.”
“Some investors may view that as instability.”
Adrian stood.
Margaret looked at him.
“Adrian.”
He did not stop.
“My pregnant wife was pushed down a staircase.”
No one spoke.
“She warned me.”
Still silence.
“I did not believe her quickly enough.”
He looked around the room.
“If anyone in this family wants to protect reputation by making Elena disappear again, remove my name from every company document now.”
That afternoon, Adrian resigned as CEO.
Not forever.
But immediately.
The board panicked.
I did too.
“You don’t have to destroy your career.”
He looked at me.
“I’m not.”
“You resigned.”
“I chose.”
“For me?”
“For our daughter.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“And because I need to know who I am when the family name stops deciding for me.”
That was the first moment I considered that maybe Adrian truly understood.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Then Margaret came into the room.
She held an envelope.
“I found this in my safe.”
“What?”
“A letter from Adrian’s grandfather.”
It had been sealed twelve years earlier.
The instructions said to open only if the family trust became contested.
Margaret broke the seal.
