Chapter 15 - The Lowest Point

The stress finally caught up with me.

At thirty-one weeks, I woke with contractions.

Adrian drove me to the hospital.

Doctors slowed them.

Our daughter remained safe.

But I was ordered to rest.

For two days, I felt powerless.

Not legally.

Physically.

I could not investigate.

I could not attend meetings.

I could not walk through the mansion without remembering the staircase.

At night, I dreamed of falling.

Then waking before I reached the floor.

Adrian slept in the chair beside my hospital bed.

We were still married.

Still uncertain.

One morning, I asked:

“Why did you believe her over me?”

He did not pretend to misunderstand.

“Because believing you meant admitting I had misjudged someone for twenty years.”

I waited.

“And?”

“Because she made every concern sound small.”

He looked at me.

“One deleted message.”

“One strange comment.”

“One document.”

“One lie.”

“Nothing felt big enough until it almost killed you.”

I closed my eyes.

“That’s how patterns work.”

“I know now.”

I looked at him.

“I needed you to know before.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Again.

That was becoming important.

Then Ruiz arrived.

Her expression told me something had changed.

“Gregory is cooperating.”

Adrian sat up.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Gregory claimed Vanessa admitted what happened to Lucas.

Not directly.

She had said:

“He should have stepped back.”

Ruiz asked what that meant.

Gregory said he did not know.

Then he revealed something bigger.

Vanessa kept a private archive.

Audio.

Documents.

Photographs.

Insurance records.

Everything she used to protect herself.

“Where?”

May you like

Ruiz looked at me.

“Inside the Howard mansion.”
