Chapter 11 - The Nursery File

The Howard mansion was searched again.
This time, investigators focused on Gregory’s office.
They found building plans.
Old security codes.
Insurance policies.
Then a folder labeled NURSERY.
At first, it looked harmless.
Paint samples.
Furniture receipts.
Contractor estimates.
Then Ruiz found a second set of papers behind the decorative plans.
Guardianship projections.
Estate calculations.
Trust diagrams.
My name appeared repeatedly.
So did my daughter’s.
One chart compared two outcomes.
Child born.
Trust branch closes.
Property control restricted.
Pregnancy ends before birth.
Trust branch remains open.
Asset sale remains possible.
At the bottom was a projected purchase offer from a company linked to Gregory.
The Malibu mansion sat on land developers had wanted for years.
Its value had tripled.
If the property became restricted by my daughter’s trust, Gregory lost his chance.
Vanessa lost hers too.
Her brother controlled a portion of the development consortium.
The baby was not simply personal competition.
She was a financial obstacle.
Adrian stared at the file.
“They were planning to sell my family home.”
“Eventually.”
Ruiz turned another page.
A proposed sale date appeared.
Six months after my due date.
Then crossed out.
Replaced with:
Before activation preferred.
I felt my daughter move.
Again.
Always when I needed reminding.
She was not an estate clause.
Not a trust event.
Not leverage.
She was a child.
And two adults had reduced her existence to a deadline.
Then Ruiz found a handwritten note.
Three words.
Stairs remain simplest.
No signature.
No date.
May you like
But the paper came from Gregory’s office.
And the handwriting appeared to match Vanessa’s.
