Chapter 5 - What the Camera Saw

The footage was clearer than I wanted.

Detective Ruiz showed it to me the next morning.

I watched myself standing near the top of the staircase.

Vanessa blocked the hallway.

“You need to leave Adrian.”

“No.”

“You don’t belong here.”

“That isn’t your decision.”

Her expression changed.

Then she stepped closer.

“The baby complicates everything.”

I remembered that sentence.

Hearing it again made my skin cold.

“What does my daughter complicate?”

Vanessa smiled.

“You really have no idea, do you?”

Then I said the line Ruiz had prepared with me.

“I know about Lucas.”

That was when Vanessa lost control.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Her face changed.

She reached for my arm.

I stepped backward.

She followed.

Then she shoved.

Two hands.

Hard.

The camera captured everything.

No Elena rushing forward.

No self-defense.

No stumble.

Vanessa moved toward me.

Vanessa pushed.

Then came the part she did not know was recorded.

While I lay below pretending to be unconscious, Vanessa looked down.

She did not call for help.

She waited.

Seven seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Finally.”

Ruiz paused the video.

Adrian stood in the corner.

His face went gray.

Margaret began crying.

I had not heard that word during the fall.

Not clearly.

Now everyone did.

Vanessa’s attorney would later argue she meant “finally someone will understand.”

Nobody believed that explanation.

Because the next recording destroyed it.

Vanessa hurried toward Margaret.

“She attacked me.”

Then:

“She was always unstable.”

Then:

“She never loved Adrian.”

Then:

“She wanted the house.”

The script had been ready.

Ruiz looked at Margaret.

“Does any of that language sound familiar?”

Margaret wiped her face.

“Yes.”

“From where?”

“Vanessa.”

“How long has she been saying it?”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“Months.”

I closed my eyes.

The campaign had worked better than I knew.

Vanessa had not merely planned the staircase.

May you like

She had prepared the witnesses.

Everyone in that room had already been taught what to believe when I fell.
