Chapter 6 - THE SIGNATURE
Daniel insisted he had never signed the altered agreement.
Eleanor believed him.
The signature itself was real.
The surrounding document was not.
Two months earlier, Vanessa had organized a charity partnership for homeless veterans.
She asked Daniel to sign several sponsorship forms at dinner.
He had trusted her.
He signed without reading every page.
One legitimate signature page had been removed and attached to the altered trust agreement.
The receiving company was Northstar Meridian.
The same company involved in the failed eighteen-million-dollar transfer.
Detective Bennett returned with a digital warrant.
Vanessa’s phone was already turned off.
Investigators tracked it to a parking garage downtown.
They found the phone beneath a parked delivery van.
Vanessa had abandoned it.
Daniel paced across the library.
“She lived here for ten months.”
“She knew my friends.”
“She chose furniture with me.”
“She met my board.”
Eleanor sat across from him.
“People who deceive for a living study what others need.”
Daniel stopped moving.
“What did I need?”
“To believe someone loved you without caring about this house.”
Daniel looked around the room.
The library walls were lined with rare books and family portraits.
His wealth had isolated him since childhood.
Vanessa had refused expensive gifts during the first weeks of their relationship.
She wore simple dresses.
She claimed luxury made her uncomfortable.
Only after Daniel proposed did her habits change.
She hired stylists.
Replaced the staff.
Restricted access to the house.
Convinced Daniel that Eleanor was controlling.
Every step had been gradual.
Eleanor reached into her purse.
“I need to tell you something else.”
She gave him a copy of Vanessa’s employment background check.
It had been completed by a private firm Daniel hired before allowing her access to corporate events.
The report showed no criminal record and no marriage.
Daniel frowned.
“How did they miss Adrian?”
“They did not miss him.”
“The report was altered after completion.”
“By whom?”
“The investigator who approved it disappeared three weeks ago.”
Daniel sat down slowly.
The deception had reached beyond Vanessa.
Someone had helped her enter his life.
Someone understood his company’s procedures.
Someone knew which forms he would sign.
Someone knew which employees needed to be removed.
Mark entered the library.
He placed a flash drive on the desk.
“This was found inside the lining of Vanessa’s suitcase.”
“What is on it?” Daniel asked.
Mark looked at Eleanor.
“Photographs of Daniel sleeping.”
“Copies of his fingerprints.”
