Chapter 17 - THE CONFESSION

Vanessa agreed to provide a full confession.

She described Walter’s plan from the beginning.

He introduced her to Daniel at the charity gala.

She pretended not to recognize his name.

She studied Daniel’s interests, fears, routines, and previous relationships.

She learned that he disliked women who appeared impressed by wealth.

So she rejected expensive restaurants.

She returned gifts.

She volunteered at shelters where photographers happened to be present.

Every detail had been calculated.

Adrian remained legally married to her.

Their marriage was part romance, part business arrangement.

He helped create false identities and shell companies.

Walter promised them control of Northstar Meridian and millions after Daniel signed the altered trust agreement.

Vanessa admitted planting Eleanor’s bracelet in Rosa’s room.

She admitted accusing Marcus of drinking.

She admitted threatening Helen.

She admitted photographing Daniel’s fingerprints and recording his voice.

Then she revealed the final secret.

The eighteen-million-dollar transfer had never been the true goal.

It was a test.

Walter wanted to know whether Daniel’s security device could be duplicated.

The real transfer involved seventy-two million dollars scheduled to move during the company’s annual shareholder meeting.

The destination account belonged to a trust in Vanessa’s name.

Daniel would appear responsible.

Eleanor would be accused of helping hide the fraud.

Walter planned to take control after both were removed.

The shareholder meeting was three days away.

Investigators froze the known accounts.

But Walter had created backup systems no one could locate.

Gregory knew the company network better than anyone.

He worked with federal specialists to identify hidden code.

The transfer instructions were embedded inside the building’s emergency-management software.

If the fire alarm activated during the shareholder meeting, the system would transmit Daniel’s authentication credentials and release the money.

Walter had planned a small electrical fire.

The evacuation would provide cover.

Eleanor remembered the smoke trap at the Washington club.

Walter had tested the same method.

Daniel canceled the meeting.

Detective Bennett advised him not to.

“If Walter has another person inside the company, canceling may force them to disappear.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

She understood the choice.

The meeting would proceed.

This time, Vanessa would attend.

Not as Daniel’s fiancée.

As the witness who would expose the person Walter had placed closest to the board.
