Vanessa Cole was born Vanessa Kane.
Her mother, Rebecca Cole, had changed the surname after leaving Walter.
Public records showed Rebecca died when Vanessa was seventeen.
Afterward, Vanessa entered private schools under scholarships funded by companies connected to Walter.
He paid for her education.
He arranged her employment.
He introduced her to Adrian Mercer.
Adrian was not merely her husband.
He was Walter’s chosen partner for the plan.
Eleanor studied the photographs.
Vanessa had been raised to believe the Whitmore family destroyed her life.
Walter’s motive appeared in Richard’s ledger.
Years earlier, Walter secretly borrowed company funds to cover failed investments.
Richard discovered the theft.
He planned to remove Walter from the board and report him.
Walter believed Richard’s actions caused the collapse of his marriage.
Rebecca left after learning about the fraud.
Vanessa grew up hearing only Walter’s version.

Mark found an old inventory list.
Richard’s desk had been repaired two weeks before his death.
A carpenter installed a false compartment beneath the central drawer.
Eleanor had never known.
The missing ledgers from the aviation investigation might be hidden there.
If Walter found them, he could destroy the final evidence linking him to Richard’s death.
Daniel received another message from Vanessa.
This time, it included a live video.
The stolen desk stood inside the Baltimore warehouse.
Vanessa appeared beside it.
Her face looked pale and exhausted.
Adrian stood behind her.
Walter sat in a chair near the wall.
Vanessa held a hammer.
“Come alone,” she said.
“Bring the trust agreement and the authentication device.”
“If you contact police, the desk burns.”
Daniel watched the video twice.
“She looks afraid.”
Eleanor noticed it too.
Vanessa had humiliated her without hesitation.
She had lied smoothly.
She had manipulated Daniel for months.
But in the video, her eyes kept shifting toward Adrian.
A bruise marked her wrist.
Eleanor understood something Daniel did not.
Vanessa had entered the plan willingly.
Now she might be trapped inside it.
Daniel picked up the authentication device.
“I’m going.”
Eleanor stood.
“Then we are going intelligently.”
“Vanessa said alone.”
