Chapter 2 - SIX DAYS EARLIER
Eleanor had not disguised herself because she disliked Vanessa’s clothes, accent, or ambition.
She had disguised herself because three employees had resigned from Daniel’s home in less than two months.
Each resignation contained the same careful phrase.
“Personal reasons.”
Eleanor did not believe in coincidences.
The first employee was Rosa Alvarez, a housekeeper who had worked for the Whitmore family for fourteen years.
Rosa had never missed a day without calling.
She had never spoken badly about anyone.
Yet when Eleanor asked why she had left Daniel’s mansion, Rosa refused to answer.
“Some people become dangerous when they know you need the paycheck,” Rosa finally said.
The second employee was Marcus Reed, Daniel’s driver.
He claimed Vanessa had searched his phone and accused him of stealing fuel.
The third was Helen Moore, the cook.
She left after Vanessa demanded that she serve a private dinner at midnight, then threw the food into the trash because the sauce was “too ordinary.”
Daniel knew none of this.
Vanessa always behaved differently when he was home.
She thanked employees.
She carried her own glass.
She spoke about charities and workers’ rights.
Daniel believed he had found a woman who understood responsibility.
Eleanor wanted proof before accusing the woman her son planned to marry.
She contacted Rosa and apologized for failing to notice sooner.
Then she asked for help.
Rosa found the plain uniform.
Marcus provided a used sedan.
Mark Ellis, the Whitmore family’s head of security, installed hidden cameras in common areas with Daniel’s prior authorization for property protection.
Eleanor introduced herself as “Mrs. Evans,” a temporary housekeeper recommended by an employment agency.
Vanessa hired her without checking the paperwork.
“You’re old,” Vanessa had said during the interview.
“But old women are usually obedient.”
Eleanor smiled gently.
“I try to be useful.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You will be useful if you remember one thing.”
“What is that?”
“When Daniel is here, you are treated like family.”
“And when he is gone?”
Vanessa’s smile became cold.
“You remember your place.”
