Chapter 16 - AFTER THE FLAMES

Daniel and Eleanor reached the warehouse after the scene was secured.

Smoke poured through the broken roof.

Firefighters surrounded Richard’s burned desk.

Walter sat handcuffed beside a police vehicle.

His expensive suit was covered in soot.

Adrian lay on a stretcher with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

He had fired at Detective Bennett.

An agent returned fire.

Vanessa was found behind the loading platform.

She had struck her head during the struggle.

She was unconscious but breathing.

Daniel stopped several feet away from the ambulance.

For ten months, he had imagined standing beside Vanessa at their wedding.

Now officers guarded her as a suspect.

Eleanor touched his arm.

“You do not have to decide what you feel tonight.”

Daniel looked toward Walter.

“I know what I feel about him.”

Walter watched them approach.

He smiled at Eleanor.

“You always win the room.”

“This is not a room,” Eleanor said.

“This is the end.”

Walter laughed.

“You think a ledger is enough?”

“It contains your handwriting.”

“Richard’s handwriting.”

“And Gregory’s testimony.”

“A frightened employee.”

“And Adrian.”

Walter’s smile disappeared.

Adrian had already requested an attorney and medical protection.

Detective Bennett believed he would cooperate to avoid a life sentence.

Mark carried the red ledger inside an evidence bag.

Most pages were intact.

One burned corner contained initials linking Walter to the mechanic.

Daniel stared at his father’s handwriting.

Sixteen years of grief had suddenly acquired a human face.

Vanessa regained consciousness at the hospital.

Her first request was to speak with Eleanor.

Daniel was surprised.

Eleanor was not.

Vanessa expected anger from Daniel.

She expected judgment from police.

Eleanor had become something more difficult.

A witness who had seen Vanessa at her worst and still understood where the damage began.

Eleanor entered the hospital room alone.

Vanessa’s wrist was secured to the bed.

A bandage covered her forehead.

“I saved the ledger,” Vanessa said.

“You also helped search for it.”

Vanessa looked away.

“Walter said Daniel’s father destroyed our family.”

“And you accepted that as permission to destroy mine.”

Tears filled Vanessa’s eyes.

“I loved Daniel.”

Eleanor sat beside the bed.

“You loved the way he made you feel before the plan demanded more.”

“That is not the same as loving him.”

Vanessa whispered, “Will he ever forgive me?”

Eleanor’s answer was immediate.

May you like

“Forgiveness is his decision.”

“Consequences are not.”
